Information about the role

NaCTSO is a unit within CTPHQ (National Counter Terrorism Police Headquarters). NaCTSO works with subject matter experts, government departments and key partners to protect the UK against terrorism. We do so by producing free guidance and awareness products for the public and business community.

Join a unit at the heart of keeping the country safe. As part of our specialist team, you’ll be responsible for bringing together expertise from academia and industry to deliver research that underpins national protective security guidance, products and content produced by NaCTSO.

You will take a significant leadership role within NaCTSO, managing research projects as you collate ideas, share advice and liaise with research and industry stakeholders. This is a demanding role where excellent information synthesis, communication and organisational skills are essential, as are the ability to work in partnership with external stakeholders and deliver at pace. You will need to be professionally curious, innovative and proactive. Familiarity with the current state of protective security research and research methodologies is also essential.

Key Tasks

Post holder will be required to do the following:

Integrate an evidence-based policing (EBP) approach within NaCTSO. This will include activity relating to the development of behaviours and attitudes towards EBP, improving capability and monitoring progress of maturity Set up and chair a coordination group to steer, prioritise and de-conflict research on protective security and preparedness across government departments Manage the quarterly Protect and Prepare SPoC meeting with CTSAs to improve regional dissemination of research, maintain buy-in and capture research activity Improve and build NaCTSO’s network of academic partners by proactively engaging and representing NaCTSO at events, showcases and workshops. This will include engagement with academic disciplines that are currently underrepresented in Protective Security and Preparedness research Develop a research strategy that clearly outlines NaCTSO’s research vision and aligns this to wider strategy and operational priorities Identify priority areas for research and provide compelling rational to secure funding for projects within the NaCTSO budget or alternative sources where a shortfall is apparent Develop a research area on ProtectUK that improves transparency and access to NaCTSO’s evidence-base for practitioners and the public. This will include the creation of news articles, academic guest content, research guides and publication of NaCTSO commissioned research and policy (e.g. publication of research interests) Appraise and monitor recommendations from NaCTSO commissioned research projects to ensure impact and evidence-informed policy and practice Assist and provide advice and guidance to other NaCTSO teams with work they are leading that involves a research component Work closely with commercial and commissioned suppliers (researchers) to ensure all suppliers meet their contractual obligations, deliver on schedule and within budget Ensure that all research activity complies with UK standards of equality, diversity GDPR and Human Rights legislation Produce high quality reports, deliver effective and engaging briefings on behalf of the team or NaCTSO Undertake other tasks as directed by the line manager
