Job summary

HCPC Registered Biomedical scientist within the Royal Devon Healthcare University NHS Foundation Trust Microbiology Scientific team, providing a consistently high quality and professional service to all users of service.

Key Responsibilities include:

To undertake all aspects of Microbiology Testing. To be responsible for the day to day operation of a section of the laboratory. To authorise reports. To take part in duties without supervision at a level of autonomy requiring decision making skills but can refer to more senior or medical staff for support. Participate in the Departmental Out-of-Hours shift and on-call services as an autonomous practitioner. The post holder will be working flexibly across seven days to support the Trust providing a 24-hour service.

We are delighted to be able to recruit a Biomedical Scientist to work within the Clinical Microbiology department (Barnstaple site) of the Royal Devon Healthcare University NHS Foundation Trust.

The Department of Microbiology provides a comprehensive Microbiology service to the RDUH Trust and local Population across Northern and Eastern Devon. The Department employs approximately 80 staff across two laboratories based at North Devon District Hospital and Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. The department provides a comprehensive diagnostic bacteriology, mycology, serology/virology and molecular microbiology service and processes in excess of 600,000 specimens per annum. The service operates 24/7 including weekends and overnight cover is provided by an on-call service.

The Microbiology department Northern site is situated in the town of Barnstaple with transport links to the countryside and Devon coastline. There is an on-site restaurant, caf and shop.

We are seeking an enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist with good interpersonal skills and a high degree of self-motivation to join the team. Working as an integral part of the laboratory team you will process clinical specimens for microbiological testing and interpret the results of laboratory tests and diagnostic processes, helping to deliver a high level of service quality, both to the Trust and the community. To be the successful the candidate, as well as being friendly and reliable, you will need a flexible attitude towards work with strong IT, communication and organisational skills, and an acute attention to detail. You will rotate throughout the Microbiology department, and require the ability to work under pressure and work well within a team.

You will be working as part of a small, busy team to undertake clinical technical investigations for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease. You will be required to undertake clinical technical investigations for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease. Once competent (after appropriate training) you will be expected to: coordinate, validate and authorise the day to day technical activities of a section of the laboratory to help with quality management activities of the laboratory such as audits, competency assessments and other activities as and when required; contribute towards the training of technical, scientific and medical staff.

You must be a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist and have a minimum year experience working in a diagnostic Microbiology lab. The department has achieved UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189 and is an IBMS approved training laboratory.

Working Pattern: Core hours are from 09:00 to 17:30 Monday to Friday ( hours per week), working on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays, on a rotational basis. This post will also require participation in the Microbiology on call service and any in-house shift system if service requires. (Would consider part time position). Time worked on a Saturday accrues a pay enhancement of 30% and time worked on a Sunday/Bank Holiday accrues an enhancement of 60%.

Pay: The salary advertised for this position reflects the Agenda for Change 2024-5 rates, inclusive of a pay award implemented from October 2024. If you join before this date, the pay award will be backdated to April 2024 or your start date, whichever is later.
