Job summary

An exciting opportunity for a Band 7 Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist has arisen to join the Sheffield Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) Service working in community within the Community Stroke Service MDT.

The successful candidate will be part of a supportive and progressive team that values research and service improvement to work with patients and teams. They will provide highly specialist Speech and Language assessment, therapy and support to a highly complex caseload of adults referred into the Community Stroke Service.

The successful post holder will provide clinical Speech & Language Therapy and be part of the SLT stroke pathway team.

The SLT service across both the acute and community teams in STH has approximately 55 staff (47 therapists, 7 assistants and 4 secretarial staff) (

The SLT teams are highly motivated to provide a quality service to their patients, they are research active and embrace innovation. The service has established processes for supervision and supports personal and professional development.

Main duties of the job

Applicants must have:

Attained a level of experience proportionate to the competencies detailed in the Job Description and Person Specification, which would normally entail extensive postgraduate experience. Experience of multi-disciplinary working. Registration with the Health Care Professions Council and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

Relevant professional qualification (1st degree level or equivalent qualification/experience) Registered member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists and Health Professions Council Evidence of highly specialised continuing professional development Evidence of successful completion of post graduate specialist short course up to Masters degree level equivalent Driver's licence and access to transport Membership of relevant Special Interest Groups

Extensive post-graduate experience Extensive and in-depth experience of relevant clinical area. Experience in working across a range of settings. Experience of working with relatives and carers. Evidence of multi-disciplinary team working Experience in providing advice on client management to other health professionals, carers and non-specialist health colleagues Experience of managing students including; placement organisation, mentoring, evaluation, feedback Involvement in development and delivery of training packages Experience of post-graduate teaching in specialist area Experience of service evaluation including outcome measurement, evaluation, identification of possible funding sources, writing reports/bids

Skills and Knowledge

Evidence of ability to manage specialist and complex caseload independently Ability to transcribe speech and familiarity with conversation analysis notation In depth knowledge of broad range of assessment tools and therapeutic interventions for relevant client groups Knowledge of supported conversation principles/research Knowledge of conversation analysis principles / interaction Knowledge of AAC/total communication Knowledge of standardised outcome measures and skills in the development of service-specific outcome measures In depth specialist knowledge of national policies and legislation relevant to client group Knowledge and application of professional standards and code of conduct Knowledge of professional and clinical guidelines relevant to the client group Awareness of issues relating to people with acquired disorders and effects of long-term disability Competent in use of IT for everyday communication Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance, audit and required standards of record keeping Knowledge of the NHS and understanding of the role of other professionals (relevant to client group)
