We are looking for an experinced Speech and Language Therapist to join the Sheffield Speech and Language Therapy Team, 3 days a week at Band 7 - 22.50 hours.

The post involves working with young people accessing the Youth Justice Service and Community Youth Teams who have Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs. These services aim to support positive life outcomes and reduce the likelihood of children and young people entering or re-entering the criminal justice system.

The recipients of the services will be aged between 10-21 years of age. They will be engaging with the services on a statutory or voluntary basis.

The post-holder will be fully intgrated into the multi-disciplinary Youth Justice Service and Community Youth Teams. They will be line-managed by the Vulnerable Young Persons Speech and Language Therapy Team.

They will be based at Stadia Technology Park and Flockton House and work dynamically to engage difficult to reach young people and their families. Appointments will be offered in a range of settings, both inside and outside the city.

The post involves the identification and support of SLCN for young people with significant levels of trauma and high levels of co-morbidities. This will predominantly involve assessment and liaison and when capacity allows, direct intervention.

The post involves offering a Speech and Language Therapy Service to young people accessing the Sheffield Youth Justice Service and Community Youth Teams who have Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs. These services aim to support positive life outcomes and reduce the likelihood of children and young people entering or re-entering the criminal justice system.

To manage a highly complex and highly specialist caseload independently, involving effective liaison and prioritising appropriately.

To identify at a highly specialist level, the types of communication disorders found in vulnerable young people.

To be flexible in working with a range of other professionals from other services such as health, social care, police, probation, and education.

To offer appropriate communication advice and consultation to the young people, their parent/carers and professionals working with them.

To work closely with Youth Justice/Community Youth Team staff to facilitate communication skills within the identified population.

To plan and provide intervention options for this population, as appropriate, to include individual and group work (capacity enabling).

To organise, plan and undertake training of staff and partner agencies to raise awareness of the types of communication difficulties faced by the young people and to provide strategies to facilitate their communication.

To attend professional team meetings as appropriate.

To attend Youth Justice specialist team and staff meetings/training (working days/capacity allowing).

To offer a flexible approach to working hours, in line with service requirements. This may include occasional evening working to attend conferences or to support families etc.

To work closely with team leaders and service managers to develop and embed a SLCN pathway.

To work closely with team leaders and service managers to provide feedback on the overall pathway, reporting trends, risks, rates of referral and other pathway information.

To develop appropriate communication targets and resources.

To evaluate intervention outcomes

To demonstrate highly developed negotiation and problem-solving skills, including around highly complex case management, including patient advocacy and ethical decision making.

To participate in multi-disciplinary patient case management, ensuring patients and carers are involved wherever possible.
