Job summary

We are looking for an Interim Deputy Director of Public Health who shares our vision, ambition and values who can provide leadership to the team and support the Health Board in its journey to implementing its Population Health Strategy, ensuring continuity of engagement at senior level. The post is for 6 months (with a view to possible further 6 months extension).

As part of the senior leadership within the local Health Board this post will work closely with local partners and national agencies including Public Health Wales. This is a development opportunity for Consultants who aspire to become Directors of Public Health or those who wish to gain experience of Health Board working, in preparation for other executive roles.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an experienced public health specialist who can contribute effectively to strategic leadership across the range of activities undertaken by the Health Board and our statutory partnerships (PSBs and RPB) and someone who can help lead the further development and implementation of approaches that support the Health Board in realising our population health ambitions.

Job responsibilities

Population health challenges in SBU Health Board include significant inequalities in population health with high mortality from substance misuse and suicide. There are progressive agendas in both local authority areas and a Health Board that is rapidly transforming with an explicit commitment to population health and an appetite for innovation.

The successful individual will be adept at navigating the Welsh public health system, in building effective networks and in influencing without direct authority. A creative approach to working with stakeholders and partners will be coupled to a hunger to deliver demonstrable outcomes. The successful individual will bring professional credibility and additional capacity in robust leadership to engage, support and develop the public health team.

Qualifications

Essential

Inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List/UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists If included in the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List in a specialty other than public health medicine/dental public health, candidates must have equivalent training and/or appropriate experience of public health medicine practice MFPH by examination, by exemption or by assessment Applicants must meet minimum CPD requirements ( be up to date) in accordance with Faculty of Public Health requirements or other recognised body

Experience

Extensive experience of public health practice at senior level Proven experience of contributing at Board level Excellent staff and corporate management and development skill Experience of working in complex political and social environments Practical experience in facilitating change
