Practice overview

Our private equity real estate practice (“PERE”) brings together several core practices at Macfarlanes under dedicated leadership to advise upon all aspects of private equity real estate, including fund formation, joint ventures, separate managed accounts, direct and indirect transactions (including onshore and offshore corporates, unit trusts and partnerships), debt and equity financings, tax and corporate restructuring.

The PERE sector is constantly innovating, responding to the social, environmental and technological factors shaping today’s real estate market. This evolution is particularly apparent in the growth of alternative real estate sectors and the increasing importance of real estate operating businesses as drivers of value for investors. Macfarlanes’ PERE practice has been formed to help its clients to navigate this dynamic market and the multi-disciplinary challenges it presents, providing experienced leadership and a deep, commercial understanding of the sector to drive successful outcomes for our clients.

Our private equity real estate group consists of eight fee earners within the commercial real estate group. However, as our work spans across real estate, corporate, commercial, finance and tax to provide comprehensive support across all facets of a transaction, a role within the PERE team requires working closely with and developing strong relationships across multiple practice areas.


The role

A role in the PERE team presents an exciting opportunity to get involved in a wide variety of market leading transactions in sectors at the cutting edge of the real estate market.

The individual will be required to carry out a broad range of good quality work. Key duties will include:

acting as the lead associate on fundraisings; acting across the full spectrum of real estate and real asset funds including both fixed life and evergreen structures; advising clients in relation to both established and start-up managers on all aspects of fund structuring and marketing; advising managers and active institutional investors in connection with their investments in real estate funds; advising fund manager clients on the full range of compliance issues that arise during the fundraising process as well as throughout the life, and on termination, of a fund; guiding clients on conflicts of interests, transparency, conduct of secondary sales, corporate governance and the conduct of placement agents; and Lead in promoting the growth of the real estate funds practice.

This job description encompasses the main duties of the role and is by no means exhaustive. It is anticipated that duties may vary from time to time according to the needs of the practice area.


The candidate

Given the broad spectrum of work that the PERE team carries out, candidates could come from a wide variety of backgrounds including commercial real estate where there is a strong funds practice, funds and investment management or in-house. The ideal candidate will be comfortable being presented with a wide variety of work and be resilient, flexible and proactive in approach. Experience of the real estate market is highly desirable and candidates will be required to demonstrate a genuine interest in the PERE sector and strong commercial awareness and literacy.

The successful candidate will have strong real estate funds experience and will be eager to develop their expertise in this area. We are looking for a driven, energetic and ambitious individual who is able to work independently, demonstrates leadership qualities and who will play a key role in building the practice and develop relationships with clients.

In addition, they will meet the following criteria:

at least five years’ post-qualification experience; strong academic qualifications from degree upwards; and articulate and confident to deliver at the highest standard.
