Job summary

To provide a high standard physiotherapy service to all Paediatric patients within the rotational areas stated below. This post is part of a nine monthly rotation scheme that currently includes the the following specialties:

Oncology/ Haematology Acute Respiratory to include Paediatric Critical Care, Neonatal unit and Children's medical/surgical wards. Cystic Fibrosis, including outreach home visits. Elective inpatient Orthopaedics Musculoskeletal outpatients (based at Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre)

Main duties of the job

To provide an effective and efficient physiotherapy service to patients, including assessing, treating and delegating the changing workload within the designated specialist area and wider Paediatric caseload. Perform specialist assessment of patients including those with highly complex presentations, and from this formulate a diagnosis and treatment plan, which is carried out as an autonomous practitioner. To improve paediatric skills and knowledge by rotating through the various speciality areas. There will also be the opportunity to gain experience in Neurorehabilitation and Trauma patients. To sustain an active role in service development within specialist areas throughout the duration of rotation Assist in the supervision, teaching and appraisal of Band 5 physiotherapists, and physiotherapy students. Assist in the operational management and overall development of the Children's Therapies team. Support the team leader and undertake delegated responsibilities. Supervise, initiate and participate in evidence-based projects within Paediatrics, in conjunction with the Band 7 Team Leader. Assisting with implementing changes within designated area and setting and monitoring standards of practice. Clinical :

To be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of the post-holders own work including the management of complex patients requiring specialised Paediatric Physiotherapy intervention. To manage a complex and busy caseload, and to demonstrate the ability to work flexibly to deliver efficient patient services in a range of models. To carry out assessment of patients as an autonomous practitioner, including those with diverse or complex presentations / multi pathologies; using clinical reasoning skills, and knowledge of evidence-based practice, to determine an appropriate care plan utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options. To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses in a wide range of conditions including those with a complex presentation, with guidance, when appropriate, from specialist physiotherapists. To formulate accurate prognoses and recommend best course of intervention, developing comprehensive treatment and discharge plans, based on sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and treatment skills. To evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter / progress the treatment programme as required. To assess a patients capacity to understand and to gain valid, informed consent for treatment. To work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent or refuse treatment. To co-ordinate intervention which may include other disciplines; advise and educate patient/carers/relatives/other health professionals To maintain accurate electronic records using POMR system, in line with Professional Standards. To provide comprehensive progress and discharge reports to referrers as required. To be responsible for ensuring that Band 5 staff and student physiotherapists are maintaining the department standards. To manage clinical risk within own caseload at all times To participate in the Paediatric Respiratory on-call service as a lone practitioner within the hospital site (with the possibility of twilight working), in addition to providing advice to MDT via telephone. To demonstrate the physical ability to carry out physiotherapy assessment and interventions including manual therapy techniques and therapeutic handling. To demonstrate highly developed dexterity and co-ordination skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients. To be able to manage potentially stressful, upsetting or emotional situations in an empathetic manner. To represent physiotherapy and / or individual patients at multi- disciplinary team meetings, to ensure delivery of co-ordinated care. This will include discussion of patient care / discharge planning. To be able to motivate and persuade others through effective communication skills, with the benefit of verbal and non-verbal skills, using written and electronic information where needed. To demonstrate the ability to communicate complex and sensitive information to patient, carers and other staff, where there may be barriers to communication non-English speakers, those with communication disorders, impaired sight, hearing difficulties. To maintain close links, communication and liaison between all staff and people involved in patient care.

Management:

To be responsible for competent use and maintenance reporting of equipment used on each rotation, including (but not limited to) gym equipment, hoists, respiratory equipment, saturation monitors and patient appliances, and to ensure that junior staff/students and assistants attain competency prior to use. To assist in the supervision, teaching and appraisal of junior staff and assistants on a daily basis. To be responsible for the operational management of the designated team in the absence of the team leader or as required. To flexibly plan and organise own time, patient caseload, meetings, training and adjusting plans as required according to staffing levels. To be able to respond to unpredictable work patterns and frequent interruptions. To assist in the planning of juniors, students and assistants timetables and deputise for the team leader in organisational duties. Person Specification
