Job summary

The post holder will assist with the holistic care of patients with respiratory conditions and the provision of clinical health psychology services to adults with respiratory conditions within the Brighton and Hove catchment area. This will mean providing face to face services in the community setting across the city.

The post holder will be required to utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the service.

The post holder will also be involved in networking with other relevant services and offering training and consultation with regards to psychological aspects of Respiratory care where appropriate.

The post holder will be a member of the trust Psychological Professions Forum, which offers professional and peer support with other psychologist practitioners working in a variety of health care settings with opportunities to join peer supervision groups and attend CPD events.

This post is WTE (2 days per week) and the specialist portfolio also has a psychological practitioner vacancy ( WTE, days) in our bladder and bowel service if any suitably trained candidates were interested in combining both roles.

Main duties of the job

To provide a qualified specialist psychology service to clients with respiratory conditions under the auspices of the Community Respiratory service; providing highly specialist psychological assessment and therapy, and consultation to MDT members at the same time as offering advice and consultation on clients' psychological care to GP's, secondary care Respiratory and mental health services, non-psychologist colleagues and to other, non-professional carers; working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the service's policies and procedures.

To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a client's mental health problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the client's problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings.

To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups within and across teams. Adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models.

To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide specialist psychological assessments of clients with respiratory conditions referred to the service based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological and psychometric tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the clients care.

To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management.

To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients whose problems are managed by psychologically based standard care plans.

To contribute to the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes, in consultation with the post holders professional and service manager.

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management of the other psychotherapy team members and accountable for the service delivery.

Person Specification

Qualifications and/or Professional Registration

Essential

HPC registered clinical/ counselling psychologist or UKCP/ BACP accredited psychotherapist, or BABCP accredited CBT therapist Demonstrate further specialist training/or experience in the delivery of psychological since qualification. Training/or equivalent training in supervision in the context of psychological professions

Desirable

Pre/post qualification training in health related psychological treatment Postgraduate research experience and relevant skills Training skills in research and audit methodology, staff training and consultations

Experience

Essential

Specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across a range of care settings including, outpatient, community, primary care and inpatient settings Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, and presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse. Demonstrate further specialist experience Experience of working with patients with respiratory or other long term condition/s Experience of the application of psychology to the different cultural contexts

Desirable

Evidence of study and clinical practice in clinical health psychology/working with patients with long term medical conditions Experience of teaching, training and supervision Experience of managing own waiting lists and service information requirements

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

The use of complex methods of psychological assessment and intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration High level knowledge of the theory of practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies, including CBT Able to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to patients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS Able to provide consultations to both professional and non- professional groups Knowledge of research methodology, design and complex data analysis as practised within the fields of psychology Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (such as personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities) Knowledge of legislation in relation to respiratory conditions and mental health Specialist skills in the application and supervision of application of CBT and other modalities such as ACT IPT or EMDR.
