Job summary

Core Surgical Rotation Fellowships

We are offering rotating posts in a range of surgical specialities. Posts will be offered for 1 year initially, extendable for a second year by agreement.

These posts run alongside national CST posts and offer successful candidates training that is as similar as possible to national appointments. All appointees will be expected to maintain an ISCP portfolio and will be undergo an Annual Review of Clinical Progression (ARCP). Our fellows are encouraged to build their portfolios to include Audit and QIPs, surgical training courses, medical student teaching and management projects. Assistance will be provided with Work based assessments and surgical logbook progression. All surgical fellows have assigned educational and clinical supervisors.

A core surgical teaching program is in place based on the MRCS curriculum and fellows would be expected to progress through their membership exams.

Each surgical department runs separate rotas, supported by foundation doctors and Advanced surgical care practitioners.

Main duties of the job

Successful applicants will be join the 'SHO' level rota within each department. These are all assessed as being compliant with BMA / EWTD guidance

Rota details vary between surgical specialities, some covered by a mix of Foundation Year 2 doctors / Core surgical fellows / Deanery CSTs.

Work will include assessment and management of patients presenting with acute surgical emergencies and elective surgical cases. Ward and critical care management of surgical patients will be expected with supervision from Higher surgical trainees and Consultants.

Duties can be expected to include management of surgical patients throughout their outpatient and inpatient journeys. The application and interview process will assess clinical, communication and team working skills and candidates will be expected to demonstrate these.

Posts will mostly be based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital site including in the new Louisa Martindale building - due to open in May 2023. Further elective surgery is based at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath which benefits from excellent short stay surgical facilities and attendant surgical training
