Clinical Fellow Neonatology (ST4+) post with 40% time in Quality Improvement Projects

This is a middle grade neonatology post based on the Trevor Mann Baby unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. This is a full time post where 60% of time is spent undertaking clinical work (middle grade) on TMBU and 40% in quality improvement actions, guideline reviews and team training to improve patient safety.

The projects in your quality improvement project (QIP) time would be supervised by Dr Katy Barnes/Prof Heike Rabe and other members of the neonatal team. These will be based predominantly in the neonatal unit looking at current guidelines and mapping them to the recently published Ockenden Reports and QIP projects. The post would also support expanding the required simulation programme to include full team training (with consultants). Some of the team training work may also be outside of the neonatal unit, predominantly in obstetrics or paediatric surgery.

Clinical

1. Develop skills in management of acute disorders in newborns
1. Improve competence in the advanced management of medical and surgical problems in newborn infants of all gestations.
2. Attain/refine advanced neonatal resuscitation skills
3. Develop skills in neonatal outpatient management
4. Gain skills in neonatal transport.

Audit/QIP

The post holder will work together with their supervisor on the local unit guidelines to provide teaching and training materials for the QIP of the Perinatal Optimisation Pathway. The QIP will be audited at 3 monthly intervals.

The trainee will identify themes and topics from the Ockenden report and compare these with existing guidelines. Any identified gaps will be adressed and the guidelines updated, discussed in the multi-disciplinary team and then published. Bespoke training sessions will be developed and delivered by the trainee. A plan for suitable audits will be derived from this process.
