Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Band 6 Radiographer to join the Cross Sectional Team at WWL Teaching Hospitals .

The post is for 37.5 hours per week. Candidates should have a flexible approach to their working hours as this contract will be flexible across 7 day working, including evenings, weekends, nights, stand-by and across multiple sites.

WWL offers cross sectional imaging across 3 sites which includes our new state of the art Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Leigh Infirmary. Our portfolio includes 4 Siemens CT scanners and 3 Siemens MRI 1.5T wide bore scanners across all sites.

You must have proven experience of an extensive range of MRI and/or CT procedures and a demonstrable high level of MRI and/or CT scanning knowledge. It is desirable for candidates to have successfully completed the SOR IV Cannulation Qualification and essential to have recent NHS experience. You should have evidence of ongoing CPD activities incorporating current advances in both CT and MRI.

The role will require you to work across all areas in the Trust which includes those that are designated as positive, asymptomatic and negative COVID wards.

Main duties of the job

The successful post holder will- 

Perform such duties as will assist in the provision of an effective and efficient diagnostic imaging service, primarily within CT and MRI. Undertake interchangeable working between the MRI and CT departments following completion of the relevant in-house training programmes, demonstrating a flexible approach to work, in line with the requirements of future service developments and expansion of services. Participate in the out of hours CT standby service to cover the CT night service in the event of unplanned sickness. Work flexible hours to meet the demands of the service across 7 days and multiple sites, this will also include night shift rotation. Work within the CT/MRI department, providing leadership and training to more junior staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

BSc In Diagnostic Radiography or a Diploma of the College of Radiographers (Diagnostic) Must keep evidence of an up-to-date record of continual professional development and necessary training within a portfolio. Sound generic Post Graduate experience. Completion of in-house training programme for CT and/or MRI scanning, including both practical and theoretical aspects of the CT/MRI scanner and related equipment. Extensive knowledge and understanding of cross-sectional anatomy. Must be receptive to future role development to allow further improvement and expansion. Intravenous Injection Certificate is desirable. If not, a willingness to undertake this training is required. To be competent in the use of accessory equipment such as oxygen and suction machines and appropriate resuscitation equipment.

Key results from the job holder

To perform unsupervised radiography and MRI/CT scanning as required. The post holder will be required to perform a wide range of CT/MRI scanning techniques. To ensure high standards of image quality for conventional Radiography and CT/MRI. Exercise judgement, based on knowledge and experience to assess and interpret patient condition and amend technique /protocol from a range of alternatives. Ability to critically appraise the technical quality and diagnostic value of CT/MRI images and the need for further imaging before submission for reporting. To deputise for the Band 7 Radiographers and undertake specific leadership responsibilities as designated by them. To have a flexible approach to work and be willing to adapt to service needs as they arise. To participate in the standby rota for CT for the provision of unplanned sickness during the night, to enable service continuity by meeting relevant targets. To be responsible for the correct care of patients attending for diagnostic imaging. Is responsible for the radiation dose received by patients during their CT examination. Is responsible for MR Safety of staff, patients and visitors to the MRI Department. To act responsibly with regard to matters concerning radiation protection for staff and patients. To seek help from the Radiation Protection Supervisor when required. To follow the local rules at all times. Planning and Organisational Duties

To plan and prioritise own workload, taking into account clinical and service needs. Responsible for the safe use of the MRI/CT scanners and related equipment and for the safety of self and other users. Be responsible for the safe use of a variety of equipment within the radiology department. Ensure that best value and use of resources is maintained at all times

Responsibility for Human Resources

Compliance with Trust Policies and Procedures, including the Code of Conduct. Ensure compliance with Mandatory training requirements in accordance with Trust Policy To support the department induction process for new work colleagues. To supervise junior members of the Trust in the performance of their duties. Responsible for entering information about radiology examinations into the Radiology Information System (RIS) and correcting/updating records where required. Ensure accurate records are kept on the RIS System in line with Medicines Management requirements. Responsibility for ensuring accurate data and images are displayed on the Picture Archive Communication Systems (PACS). Ensure accurate patient information is recorded on scans. Manage the storage and retrieval of CT/MRI scans from disk or PACS. To safeguard at all times confidentiality of information relating to patients and staff

Work Circumstances & on-call

Works in the CT Department where high dose radiation examinations are carried out. There is an occasional need to be exposed to this hazard. Working within MRI scanner with associated magnetic field safety requirements Prolonged use of VDU screens. Required to perform CT standby duties in times of staff sickness. This will require lone working through the night performing emergency scans. Daily exposure to highly unpleasant working conditions eg. Bodily fluids, blood, urine, vomit, faeces and infections such as MRSA and CDT. Maintain knowledge of cross infection control procedures in order to be able to deal safely with hazardous substances and body fluids.

Physical Skills

Have a high level of dexterity, correlation and sensory skills and a high level of co-ordination in order to do complex physical skills to manipulate patients safely for positioning and equipment with precision on a daily basis.
