Main duties of the job

You will need to be an NMC registered nurse who has enthusiasm, energy and a passion for delivering the best nursing care possible. Community experience is not essential but you will need to demonstrate that you have an understanding and awareness of autonomous working in the community setting, with evidence of some transferable skills.

The successful applicant may have contact with patients or service users. As an NHS Trust we strongly encourage and support vaccination as this remains the best way to protect yourself, your family, your colleagues and of course patients and service users when working on our healthcare settings

There is no typical day in district nursing as every visit requires a different set of skills and approach, the variety keeps the job interesting and the learning never stops.

Job responsibilities

We aim to employ only the best health care professionals in our teams and are committed to supporting staff to consolidate and develop skills to prepare them for professional progression within district nursing and wider services.

CNWL provides a robust preceptorship program that focuses on progression and development of skills which includes regular supervision and a first-class learning experience in all aspects of community nursing. We have an extensive in-house training program that will equip you with all the theoretical knowledge required to ensure you are a confident, competent practitioner. In addition, our newly recruited clinical nurse facilitator will be available to guide and support all new starters within the district nursing service to ensure you feel supported and you have an enhanced learning and development experience.

As per national policies there is a growing need to deliver more complex care in the community to ensure local hospital beds are free for patients who are acutely unwell. Every day is different in community nursing and you will be supported to obtain a comprehensive set of skills to care for patients with a variety of needs.

Skills include but are not limited to:

The ability to work as an autonomous practioner Diabetic management - monitoring of blood sugars and insulin administration. Access to a specialist diabetic nursing team. Tissue viability/Wound care- Leg ulcer, compression therapy, doppler assessments, Vac dressings, pressure ulcers, surgical wounds and many more. Access to a specialist tissue viability team. Bladder and Bowel skills- Male, female and suprapubic catheterisation, bowel care, continence assessments. Access to a specialist bladder and bowel team. IV medication administration: Care of picc/mid line, preparation and administration of intravenous medications. Palliative care: Support visits, symptom control, administration of anticipatory medications (stat doses and syringe drivers). Access to a specialist community palliative care team. Drain care : Rocket drains, nephrostomies, chest drains etc

Excellent communication skills - written and verbal Numeracy skills required for the safe administration of medicines Able to develop and maintain communication with people about difficult matters and/or in difficult situations Sound IT skills Support equality and value diversity Understanding of concept of risk management within a community setting To provide effective and courteous communication with patients, their carers, other members of the multidisciplinary team and Trust staff To record accurately details of care given, observations and monitoring of patients and assist in general record keeping and documentation To work in partnership with the members of the primary care team such as the GP and the Practice Nurse, to deliver a high quality nursing care. Hold a full UK driver's licence and have use of a car for business purposes or have independent means of transport to ensure a timely delivery of patient care.
