Job summary
Horton Renal Unit is a nurse led unit situated in the Horton General Hospital. Our 6 bedded ward provides renal replacement therapy to patients in an outpatient setting between the hours of 7am and , Monday to team serves outpatients from Banbury and the surrounding areas.
In this environment, we actively empower patients to participate in their care. We seek a highly motivated individual, eager to learn dialysis skills, and prior experience is optional. The successful candidate will be given a supernumerary induction period, at the elbow support from the dialysis team and clinical educator plus opportunities to attend Renal specific study days. Our Dialysis Healthcare Support Workers are trained to obtain skills and perform duties you would not have the opportunity to learn in any other setting. A full training programme with competency sign off will be provided.
This position requires flexibility and the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities.
Main duties of the job
Prepare dialysis equipment before the start of haemodialysis sessions, including proper lining, priming, and safety checks. Understand the dialysis prescription and ensure the machine is correctly set up for each patient, with the accuracy checked by a registered nurse. Assess the patient's condition prior to dialysis treatment, accurately document findings, and promptly escalate any changes in the patient's condition to the registered nurse. Perform clinical observations such as monitoring pulse, blood pressure, and weight before and after dialysis. A registered nurse should review any assessments made. Be able to identify abnormal parameters and promptly inform the registered nurse. Accurately complete all required documentation. Recognise personal limitations and follow the direction of the registered nurse regarding patient assignments suitable for their skill level. Start and end dialysis treatments and evaluate their effectiveness using weight changes and clinical observation, complete evaluation in collaboration with the registered nurse. Assist patients with activities of daily living as needed, including hygiene and assistance with food. Support registered nurses during emergencies by obtaining the necessary equipment and responding promptly. Perform investigations, such as body composition monitoring and access flow readings, document these promptly and accurately and report details to registered nurse. (Full training will be given)

Maintaining a safe environment at all times. Ensuring the general tidiness of the unit, including clinical rooms and dialysis preparation areas. Providing light refreshments for patients as required. Answering telephone calls and being willing to learn how to use available information technology. Not holding the drug keys as part of their responsibilities. Requesting, sampling and labelling blood samples under the direction of a registered nurse. (Venepuncture training is not a requirement due to the method of sampling) Monitoring and ensuring the proper functioning of all equipment on the ward, including appropriate cleaning and storage.
