Analysing condition data, identifying degradation trends and developing an understanding of engineering principles to provide the business with decision-making insights that enable one of the UK’s most critical pieces of infrastructure to be maintained, as we drive towards the UK’s net-zero targets.

About the role

As one of our Condition Monitoring Technicians, you’ll be a major part of all things Condition Monitoring including defects and failure modes of overhead components, including steelwork, conductors, insulators and fittings as well new technologies to monitor and analyse asset data.

Working at the heart of Electricity Transmission (ET) the OHL Condition Monitoring team drive the asset inspection programme for Overhead Lines and manage the data that drives future interventions of the network.

You will work in a team to analyse data National Grid’s OHL inspection programme that utilises National Grid’s Helicopter Unit and Climbing Teams to gather high-definition images of steelwork, insulators and fittings, which are used to determine asset condition. You will carry out additional inspections using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) / a.k.a drone, to ensure sufficient coverage of each overhead line routes.

You will play a key role in the identifying and managing overhead line defects. You will look to develop your analytical skills through excel and Power BI to support the team in identifying defect trends that could lead to the development of capital rectification schemes.

You will liaise with National Grid’s Helicopter Unit, who will provide much of the asset data, as well as our internal customers who utilise our data to make asset decisions. You will work closely with other members of the team to drive improvements in our processes and engineering knowledge and support our engagement with third-parties to drive technological innovations in UAV/drone technology and other advanced survey techniques.

A typical week in this role

Identifying defects on overhead line assets, engaging with the regional OHL Teams to support the delivery of maintenance work and the gathering of condition samples that will inform the business of an assets condition. Developing scope of works for maintenance schemes and attending site as part of an UAV operation, inspecting a number of transmission towers for defects and condition data. Hybrid and flexible working.

About you

Excellent attention to detail. Excited by the challenge of analysing data that contributes to maintaining one of the UK’s most critical, and expanding, assets. Good understanding of engineering principles. Can confidently communicate to a variety of project stakeholders engineering information. Be proficient using primary Microsoft Office programmes including Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word to develop and discuss condition data for use by internal and external stakeholders. Experience of prioritising own work based on technical judgement. HNC or equivalent in a STEM discipline would be preferable, but keen to work towards if not. Engineering or Industrial experience. Full UK driving license.
