The Role

We are looking to recruit a Specialist Occupational Therapist (Medicine for the Older Adults) to join our supportive, progressive team, in the fast paced environment of Medicine for the Older Adult based at University Hospital Monklands (UHM).

UHM’s Medicine of the older adult service consists of a frailty receiving unit focusing on early intervention, rapid assessment and discharge from hospital within 24-48hours. There are two 24 bedded wards for acute rehab where the post holder will work with the multidisciplinary team to treat individuals who are frailty positive and are admitted to the ward due to frequent falls, geriatric orthopaedic rehab post fractures/operations, vascular amputation, delirium, cognitive decline and general deconditioning.

Within Lanarkshire we are passionate on achieving an active wards ethos and ending pj paralysis. In UHM medicine of the older adult, occupational therapy play an integral role in implementing weekly activity classes, reaching fit to sit targets and delivering education to staff and families on hospital deconditioning and adopting a “think activity” approach to a hospital stay.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate sound clinical reasoning and core Occupational Therapy skills. They will be able to prioritise and work in a busy and fast-paced environment, and demonstrate a creative and dynamic approach to achieving patient’s goals for discharge. University Hospital Monkland’s Medicine of the Older Adult prides itself on their true multidisciplinary working approach, you will attend daily MDT and predicted discharge date meetings to ensure appropriate and timely working. The post holder should be self-motivating and able to maintain team focus on early intervention, person-centred goal setting and discharge planning to ensure timeous discharge.

As the Specialist OT you will share responsibility for day to day operational issues within the Occupational Therapy Team, and be involved in service improvement, staff development, supervision, clinical effectiveness and student education.

As a team, we wish to continue in our improvement journey; to encourage personal development, maintain and build upon relationships with our community colleagues and to increase patient and carer experience with occupational therapy.
