We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, motivated person to join our growing team in the Endoscopy Unit as Endoscopy Deputy Lead Nurse at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust .

This is an exciting opportunity for a Band 7 registered nurse to join our specialist Endoscopy team. The post holder will need to have experience at a Band 6 level within an acute setting and have a keen interest in Endoscopy

You will need to have experience of the endoscopy service in order to lead the department.

Your role will involve ensuring that staff deliver a patient-centred, clinically effective, proactive and dynamic service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder carries continuing responsibility throughout the 24 hour period for the assessment and delivery of care for patients in the Endoscopy Unit. They are also accountable for resource management of the area including budgets, capacity and patient pathways. 

Provide excellent standards of care and expertise, both in delivering direct patient care and in the support of other staff caring for the higher needs and dependency of our patients.

To supervise, manage and teach other nursing and non-nursing staff, acting as an excellent clinical role model and team leader to ensure quality care is delivered.

The post holder will have responsibility for the delivery and monitoring of high standards of nursing care to all patients on the ward in accordance with relevant evidence based professional practice and Trust policies. 

The post holder will provide clinical and managerial leadership to the Endoscopy department. The role involves deputising for the Endoscopy Operational Manager in their absence.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

To possess a high level of professional knowledge of endoscopic practices enabling the safe management of patient care within the department. To provide professional leadership, direction and support to all department staff, users, consultants, their teams and directorate management.  To help implement and keep updated the GRS and JAG standards throughout Endoscopy.  To act as a role model and clinical expert within the Gastroenterology specialty within the Trust and outside it. To co-ordinate the admission and investigation of patients requiring endoscopic investigation. To ensure that clinical practice and care is underpinned by evidence-based practice where applicable and ensure the application of research into clinical practice.

Communication

To provide support and counselling to patients and their careers and to staff members. To develop and maintain key working relationships with Gastroenterologists, GI surgeons, GI Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nutrition Nurse Specialist, Endoscopy Unit Manager, Divisional Manager, Matron and staff. To communicate effectively verbally and via formal documentation and electronic sources, with all members of the nursing, multidisciplinary team, patients, and their relatives and discuss complex issues to ensure patients receive optimum care. To communicate daily face to face and on the telephone with administration and clerical staff and ward staff to ensure continuity of care.

Personal and people development

To assist in the development of induction programmes, guiding practice, assessing competence, enabling and supporting learning. To participate in regular 1:1s and IPR with line manager To adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct and Trust policies To demonstrate professional leadership skills and act as a role model, encouraging and promoting good practice. To work in collaboration with the Endoscopy Unit manager and Endoscopy practice development Nurse to contribute to developing and delivering teaching programmes with regard to the use of highly specialised technical and expensive Endoscopy equipment. To act as an advocate for the patient To ensures all members of staff receive mandatory training and all staff are correctly trained to use all equipment and to keep accurate records of such training. To identify training needs with regards to the continuing development of the department and to ensure appropriate programs of education are commissioned. To ensure that all staff receive orientation, induction, mandatory training and Completion of Endoscopy To ensure all staff are properly trained in relation to COSHH, decontamination and other health and safety issues within the dept. To represent the department’s staff at various forums, promoting the profile of endoscopy nursing. Using the appraisal framework, progress personal and professional knowledge and skills.

Service Improvement

To liaise with all Consultants to ensure that list schedules are maximized. To ensure resources are available and used effectively. To ensure that all endoscopy services are delivered efficiently and effectively within the allocated budget. To manage the development, implementation and evaluation of new and existing practices and policies. Promote a culture where change is embraced and there is commitment to achieving and sustaining high standards of patient care and clinical practice

Quality

To monitor patient satisfaction within the department whilst working closely with the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) and the Complaints & Legal Services Department. To help ensure that action plans to achieve level A in the Global rating Score are followed through in a timely fashion. To take an active part in the Global rating Score and JAG assessments for endoscopy in conjunction with the Endoscopy Unit Manager and Clinical lead. To ensure that patients and their relatives have access to information that is current and allows them to make informed decisions about Endoscopy procedures and treatment To help lead on the development and implementation of the Trust’s nursing strategy within the department and support the directorate in developing and progressing the corporate nursing agenda. To contribute significantly to and/or lead unit clinical projects, standard settings, audits and quality monitoring in conjunction with the Unit manager. To investigate complaints and incidents and to provide reports in line with Trust policy. To help develop a strategic plan for the endoscopy service that involves patient-centered evidence-based programs of care for patients through continuous quality improvement and regular review of the service. To assist in audits and research both internally and externally Work regularly with all grades of staff to observe and influence practice and process
