Job summary

Are you a clinical pharmacist with an interest in cardiology or circulatory health? We have an unique opportunity for you to take on a lead pharmacist role in cardiology here at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

You will work with, supervise and be a role model for other pharmacists in order to lead, plan and develop an advanced specialist clinical pharmacy service in Cardiology, which is consistent with the priorities and needs of the relevant Clinical Service Line. This should also be in line with local and national policies and best practice including compliance with Medicines legislation. This will ensure the safe, clinical and cost effective use of medicines and staff resources. To be responsible for delivering the defined service Key Performance Indicators and include close working with other Lead or Specialist Pharmacists.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To deliver specialist pharmaceutical care in Cardiology including (where applicable) non-medical prescribing to a defined caseload of patients, in line with the agreed scope of practice, undertaking risk management and ensuring compliance with local and national clinical guidance.

To support the Clinical Service Line and Pharmacy department in meeting its risk management, financial management and clinical governance responsibilities around the use of medicines.

To lead and develop clinical pharmacy audit and practice research within the field of cardiology. To take an active part in projects to support patient safety.

To undertake clinical supervision of junior pharmacists, medicines management pharmacy technicians and pre-registration pharmacists

To act as a professional role model to all registered clinical pharmacy staff, actively demonstrating integrity, ownership and leadership in all aspects of the role.

To be a source of expert specialist advice for matters relating to cardiology to other pharmacists and other healthcare professionals

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Bachelor/Master of Pharmacy degree GPhC pharmacist registration Post graduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent Relevant senior experience

Desirable

Independent Pharmacist Prescriber Quality Improvement Training Management courses Post graduate Masters in Pharmacy Accredited Diploma Tutor Stage II RPS Faculty Member (MIIFRPS) Train the trainer qualification or equivalent

Experience

Essential

Evidence of specialist practitioner practice Experience of influencing members of the multidisciplinary team in delivering patient care Relevant continued professional development Evidence of managing and delivering a project Experience of clinically supervising and training staff Policy and service development

Desirable

Risk Management Presentation to trust wide meetings Demonstrable evidence of undertaking research and audit and using the results to improve patient care. Experience of staff line management Experience of delivering education and training to undergraduates and postgraduates of various healthcare professions

Knowledge

Essential

Expert knowledge and understanding of relevant standards and guidelines. Knowledge of legislation/guidance relating to medicines usage and prescribing Knowledge and awareness of implications of current developments in pharmacy practice and NHS strategies

Awareness of the current commissioning arrangements in the NHS Recognised as a specialist within the defined speciality

Essential

Organised and able to devise, plan and manage and prioritise work programmes Critical review/analysis and interpretation of clinical literature and medicines legislation Appropriate IT skills are required to utilise clinical information systems, pharmacy computer systems, databases and other software to improve patient care Demonstrable advanced level of clinical reasoning and judgement. Ability to apply logical and analytical skills to manage clinical risk during the use of medicines
