Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will lead, mentor, and inspire fellow pharmacists to establish, organize, and enhance an advanced specialist clinical pharmacy service in Cardiology. Your work will align with the objectives and requirements of the relevant Clinical Service Line, adhering to local and national regulations and best practices, including compliance with Medicines legislation. This will guarantee the safe, clinical, and cost-effective utilization of medications and human resources. You will be accountable for achieving the defined service Key Performance Indicators and will collaborate closely with other Lead or Specialist Pharmacists.

All new employees will undergo a probationary period covering their initial six months in the position. Travel between hospital locations may be necessary.

Job Duties

- Provide specialized pharmaceutical care in Cardiology, including (where applicable) non-medical prescribing for a designated patient caseload, in accordance with the agreed scope of practice, managing risks, and ensuring adherence to local and national clinical guidelines.

- Assist the Clinical Service Line and Pharmacy department in fulfilling its risk management, financial oversight, and clinical governance responsibilities concerning medication use.

- Lead and develop clinical pharmacy audits and practice research within the cardiology domain. Actively participate in initiatives that promote patient safety.

- Supervise junior pharmacists, medicines management pharmacy technicians, and pre-registration pharmacists.

- Serve as a professional role model for all registered clinical pharmacy staff, exemplifying integrity, accountability, and leadership in all aspects of the role.

- Act as a source of expert specialist advice on cardiology-related matters for other pharmacists and healthcare professionals.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Bachelor/Master of Pharmacy degree
  • GPhC pharmacist registration
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent
  • Relevant senior experience

Desirable

  • Independent Pharmacist Prescriber
  • Quality Improvement Training
  • Management courses
  • Postgraduate Masters in Pharmacy
  • Accredited Diploma Tutor
  • Stage II RPS Faculty Member (MIIFRPS)
  • Train the trainer qualification or equivalent

  • Evidence of specialist practitioner practice
  • Experience in influencing multidisciplinary team members in delivering patient care
  • Relevant continued professional development

  • Experience in delivering education and training to undergraduates and postgraduates across various healthcare professions

Knowledge

Essential

  • Expert knowledge and understanding of relevant standards and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of legislation/guidance relating to medication usage and prescribing
  • Awareness of implications of current developments in pharmacy practice and NHS strategies

Desirable

  • Awareness of current commissioning arrangements in the NHS
  • Recognized as a specialist within the defined specialty

Personal Skills

Essential

  • Organized and capable of devising, planning, managing, and prioritizing work programs
  • Critical review/analysis and interpretation of clinical literature and medicines legislation
  • Proficient IT skills to utilize clinical information systems, pharmacy computer systems, databases, and other software to enhance patient care
  • Demonstrable advanced level of clinical reasoning and judgment, with the ability to apply logical and analytical skills to manage clinical risk during medication use
