11 month fixed term contract/ secondment opportunity until 6th July 2024

A post is available in the Histopathology Department, which forms part of the Cellular Pathology directorate. Histopathology receives and processes patient (tissue) samples to provide diagnostic reports to hospital clinicians and General Practitioners.

This post presents an opportunity to be part of an excellent team working in a busy, modern hospital laboratory. The department has a workload of around 60 000 surgical requests per year and covers a wide range of routine and specialised services. The service is also has Biomedical Scientist advanced dissection roles and is also developing Biomedical Scientist reporting roles. The service has a specimen tracking system and is developing digital pathology reporting.

This is an excellent opportunity to work with a committed team of office, laboratory and Consultant Pathologist staff. The department encourages active professional development and further educational activities.

Part time: hours available

Main duties of the job

The Post holder will play a key role in the following areas:

Work as a BMS in all specialist areas of the lab, including, the dissection/reception, section cutting/embedding, special staining, and immunocytochemistry/molecular services. Carry our frozen sections and Mohs frozen sections. Support band 7 staff, including staff/workload supervision, staff training and quality control. Help support staff training and quality control/improvement.

On-call cover on rotation for state-registered BMS staff.

As the post holder, you will gain experience in all specialist areas of the laboratory work is carried out.

You will play a key role supporting band 6 specialist BMS staff.

This is an excellent development opportunity, trainee staff will be able to complete the IBMS registration portfolio. Registered BMS staff will have the opportunity to work towards the IBMs specialist portfolio. Further training opportunities can be provided.

Job responsibilities

Communicates complex service related test information to managers, Consultants, Nurses, other health care colleagues, patients and patient carers. Answers telephone inquiries from pathology users, patients and patient carers about test results and provide information that is complex concerning methodologies and service requirements, seeking advice as required. Assists in explaining results and reassures the users that the information is correct after seeking advice when results do not agree with clinical presentation. Manages own work on a daily basis in specialised services. Responsible for processing both urgent and routine work to maintain routine turnaround times in line with Trust and Service polices. Maintains as part of a team, complex specialist analytical equipment on a daily basis and assess fitness for clinical use referring to senior staff as appropriate. Assists in managing and maintaining specialised databases in laboratory computer systems and patient storage databases. Responsible for inputting and amending patient data and results, which includes other colleagues work. Use research and development protocols on a daily basis to provide statistical presentations of internal quality control (QC) to assess equipment performance in line with QC rules ( Westgard). Assist in the evaluation and development of methods to improve the service and patient care diagnostic tests. Assist in the education and training of Medical staff, Clinical Scientists, other BMS, Trainee BMS, MLAs and visiting students as required within their specialised area.
