Job summary

Are you looking for an opportunity to expand opportunities within the dietetics? We are seeking a dietetic therapy manager to work with our existing medical, surgical, critical care, outpatient and community teams.

The successful candidate will provide professional and clinical leadership to our dietitians, working with our clinicians to continue to deliver high quality, excellent care and patient experience to our population.

Being a part of establishing and developing the strategic direction and potential of the dietetic services within the Trust is an expectation of this role.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the high quality delivery of planning, coordinating, delivering and evaluating the provision of dietetic services in medical, surgical, critical care inpatients, outpatients and community.

Recruitment and retention of high quality staff is an element of this role, with the inclusion of team management ensuring they have the appropriate skills and experience to deliver high quality care.

The post holder will promote clinical governance through the implementation of high standards of clinical practice, professional development of staff through training and education and the management of clinical risk.

You will play a key role in the therapy management team for issues affecting the services and teams. And be part of establishing and developing the strategic direction and potential of Therapy Services within the Trust

The post holder will represent therapy services at a range of forums, deputising for the Associate Director of Therapies as required.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To be a specialist clinical resource for other members of staff such as medical and nursing staff, members of the specialist community-based MDT, Trust managers, and other colleagues who work in different specialities

To manage clinical risk and ensure that mechanisms are in place to ensure that clinical risk is effectively managed within all services

To interpret clinical and professional policies, guidance and standards and ensure that these components have been updated and incorporated into the Divisional strategic plans.

To be responsible for the management of the dietetic services (outpatients and community). This will include managing change, monitoring staffing levels, implementation of HCPC and Trust standards of practice and delegating responsibility as appropriate to senior staff

To monitor caseloads and workload for the dietetic staff within the specialties and support senior staff in identifying and managing appropriate caseloads for their staff

To ensure the smooth running of the service responding to unforeseen circumstances, unpredictable workloads and staff shortages

To ensure that the referral pathways across the service area are cohesive and provide an interface for the smooth transition between services

To utilise the clinical governance framework to manage risk and improve quality within the service

To develop key performance indicators for service area and be responsible for the ongoing monitoring and review of targets.

Within the outpatient and community dietetic specialties develop and promote, a culture of continuous improvement and change

To initiate and promote service developments within all acute services, attracting new funding where required.

To actively participate in Divisional and Trust meetings ensuring the sharing of information and participation in the overall development of services.

To prepare reports and board papers as requested

Identify opportunities and develop approaches for multi-therapy and cross professional training and organisation of services.

Negotiate and monitor service level agreements with organisations outside the NHS, Private Sector.

To implement robust data collection and analysis to reflect the full extent of the activity within outpatient and community dietetic services and to contribute to the Therapy department as a whole, developing and maintaining systems for monitoring activity

Manage the budgets for all services within portfolio.

Conduct option appraisals on services and development plans.

Improve the cost-effectiveness of the service via system, skill mix reviews and using benchmarking data.

To be responsible for the line management of staff within the portfolio of services, including effective direct line management of a number of Clinical Leads.

To ensure staff have appropriate supervision and support for their clinical practice and continuing professional development through team meetings, review, supervision, appraisal, training and development

To ensure training and development programmes are robust across all areas. The training provided may be clinical or non-clinical in nature guidance on project management and will be both formal and informal

To act as a role model to actively promote the role of therapists to stakeholders by supporting, advising and inspiring colleagues toward achieving excellence in their management of patients

To act as a clinical supervisor, coach and mentor, placing as much learning as possible in a clinical context facilitating the integration of knowledge and extrapolation to new situations

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Dietetic degree or equivalent HCPC registration MSc in related area clinical or managerial or equivalent experience

Experience

Essential

Significant clinical experience working at a senior level in the acute setting Experience of developing care pathways and protocols and of developing and implementing policies and procedures. Experience of successfully leading a team or services though service change and re design with a focus on productivity and efficiency. Experience of mentoring and developing other staff

Desirable

Experience of managing relationships and developing services with key partners, including GPs, Local Authorities and other agencies

Knowledge

Essential

Able to practically apply a range of specialist knowledge and expertise to leadership of given service areas. An awareness of the challenges of working in a matrix model managing some services on a specialty basis which will work across pathways and divisions.
