Job summary

The post holder will be required to support and motivate the clinical coding teams to ensure that clinical coding is timely, accurate and completed in accordance with national and local policies, and within nationally and locally agreed timescales to meet the Trust's deadlines. The post holder will monitor uncoded activity for each given Health Group (or area) on a daily basis and take relevant action to ensure complete, accurate and timely coding on a monthly basis to support the Trust.

The role requires the accurate analysis, interpretation and extraction of relevant clinical information and data (including complex conditions and treatments) from a variety of sources including discharge summaries, medical notes, radiology, pathology, and other clinical information systems. The post holder should look for areas of concern or opportunities for improvement and communicate these with their team, managers and with key Services within the Trust.

Within the specified health group or area, the post holder will assist other members of the coding management team in providing effective information, support, and guidance for divisions, clinicians and managers with regard to Clinical Coding and the National Tariff,. They will also be expected to act as mentor to all other Clinical Coders within the department.

Main duties of the job

Communication & relationship skills Develop effective working relationships with other services, both clinical and non-clinical, in order to advise them on the coding processes. Act as a mentor to junior Coding staff, encouraging their understanding of the role and what is required to progress within the Coding department. Assist the junior members of staff to access training from the Coding Auditor/Trainers. Aide the Coders to understand any audit feedback that is given, and make any necessary changes, whilst adhering to Coding Standards. Support any staff who are on external training, and assist the Auditor trainers with any staff who are preparing to sit the NCCQ. Communicate and explain complex coding rules and standards to staff at all levels across the Trust, both clinical and non-clinical. Effectively communicate the impact of clinical or coding changes on the Trusts data outputs and income. Develop effective working relationships with other colleagues and provide advice and support on Clinical Coding. Liaise with clinicians and senior managers, identify and explain issues arising within clinical coding and work collaboratively to resolve and improve clinical coding accuracy in designated area. Responsible for identifying any problems, which arise within the clinical coding of specialties within own area, discuss recommendations and resolutions with clinical teams and members of senior Clinical Coding Team.

Education and Qualifications

Essential

oEducated to Degree level or have equivalent relevant experience. oClinical Coding Qualification. oIT Driving license or similar. oACC qualified oClinical Coding Foundation Course

Desirable

oFormal management or Leadership or mentoring qualification. oAMSPAR in medical terminology or equivalent.

Occupational Experience

Essential

oExperience of Coding a range of specialties. oAt least 3 years' experience Clinical Coding Experience in and acute Trust. oExperience of working with clinicians and senior managers specifically around clinical engagement and education. oExperience working with other Trust IT systems.

Desirable

oExperience of other Microsoft Office products. oExperience of working with clinicians and senior managers specifically around clinical engagement and education. oExperience of acting as a mentor for new starters.
