We are delighted to offer the opportunity for a locum consultant thoracic surgeon to join the Barts Thorax Centre, Barts Health NHS Trust. The appointment will be for 6 months in the first instance.

Barts Health NHS trust is the largest NHS Trust in the UK serving a population of 2.5 million. The Barts Thorax Centre is an integrated unit designed around the patient journey, bringing together thoracic surgery, respiratory medicine and thoracic oncology at a single location. This is strengthened by co-location with the Barts Heart Centre, the largest cardiovascular centre in Europe, and the Barts Cancer Centre, with their extensive research infrastructure, allowing immediate and on site care of their most common comorbidities. Our facilities include two surgical robots dedicated to thoracic surgery, a hybrid theatre for image-guided procedures, robotic bronchoscopy and navigation bronchoscopy amongst the 10 theatre suite.

The successful applicant will join a growing department of thoracic surgery which offers the full spectrum of thoracic surgery and is expanding its activity. The department has its own dedicated facilities including new, spacious wards and a dedicated team of junior doctors. You will participate in the general thoracic surgery service provision and will have the opportunity to develop super specialist services including robotic surgery and robotic bronchoscopy.

Main duties of the job

Barts Health is looking for a Locum Consultant Thoracic Surgeon. This is an exciting position with opportunity for the successful applicant to join the Barts thoracic surgery team to develop its lung volume reduction, robotic surgery and research programmes. The successful candidate will be based at St Bartholomew's Hospital.

There is currently a team of 4 substantive consultant thoracic surgeons,1 locum consultant thoracic surgeon and 1 cardiothoracic surgeon with a specialist interest in chest wall.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to direct and participate in academic research at QMUL.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate professional excellence, leadership and the ability to deliver effective care. He/she will need to agree levels of activity and throughput with the Clinical Director of Surgery.

The successful candidate will be required to adhere to the Trust's policy on Maintaining Medical Excellence and to be committed to maintaining their standard of performance by keeping their knowledge and skills up to date.

Job description
Job responsibilities

Barts Trust will employ the successful candidate on a 10 programmed activity contract the split is 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA. He or she will be expected to work at the Barts Heart Centre and to provide thoracic trauma cover at the Royal London Hospital.

The successful candidate will participate in the thoracic emergency on call rota with a 1:5 commitment. When the consultant is off-site or not on-call, their consultant on-call colleagues will be responsible to cover any problems / issues.

Successful applicants must be on or within 6 months of entry onto the Specialist Register and fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice.

MB BS or equivalent FRCS(CTh) or equivalent On GMC Specialist Register for Cardiothoracic Surgery or within 6 months of obtaining CCT.

Higher Research Degree (e.g., MD or PhD)

Clinical Experience

Training in Adult Thoracic Surgery and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Cardiothoracic Surgery Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in thoracic surgery for emergency and elective situations. Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients throughout their clinical pathways. Proficiency in minimally invasive surgery
