SEND Mediation and Tribunal Assistant

As the SEND Mediation and Tribunal Assistant you will support the Tribunal Manager and Officer to develop internal tribunal and mediation systems; process and track and new appeals and work collaboratively to ensure the following:

AfC and its partners and stakeholders to make effective decisions AfC are well represented and achieve impactful outcomes

About the role

You will take on casework, prepare responses to and sometimes represent AfC in appeals and mediations. You will seek opportunities to de-escalate issues from formal routes of appeal, drawing on your persuasion and negotiation skills and have the intrinsic resilience to model and build positive working relationships with families, young people and their representatives; particularly in times of stress, crisis and when there might be combative situations. You must be able to have difficult conversations and know how to remain calm and responsive. 

You will attend SEND panels and deliver internal and external training related to SEND tribunals and mediation where appropriate and will have current and proven knowledge of the SEND and associated legislation (Children & Families Act; Children Act; Equalities Act etc) and SEND case law including the Code of Practice and SEND Regs.

Day to day activities of this role will include:

Represent AfC in informal and formal mediations with families and young people Represent AfC at SENDIST Tribunal Hearings, including preparatory work. Provide solution-focused thinking and creativity to overcome challenges as well as the ability to use critical thinking and analysis of cases.  Build and maintain strong relationships with excellent interpersonal skills with families, young people and their representatives as well as schools and other stakeholders. Work closely with SENDIASS and other voluntary groups to address feedback and resolve local issues. Travel across Kingston and Richmond Boroughs to visit schools and other locations as needed.

About you

Degree level education with a relevant professional qualification. Relevant Level 3 or higher training in SEND-related areas (Desirable). Proven practitioner with substantial experience, knowledge, and skills in the complex area of SEND. Strong background in building partnerships and maintaining relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders, including children, young people, and families. Experienced in representing the Local Authority (LA) at SEN and Disability Tribunals. Skilled in mediation and disagreement resolution meetings with parents and professionals to resolve issues without formal legal action. Proficient in arranging and chairing conferences involving parents, legal representatives, schools, and other professionals. Capable of preparing responses for appeal hearings, and liaising with legal services, SEND Service Managers, EHC Coordinator Managers/Team Leaders, and EHC Coordinators. Advises on the legal aspects of SEND cases. Demonstrates flexibility and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
