Job summary

You will be expected to support the work of the clinical genetics team including requesting family information and results to aid in the counselling of patients and their families. You will also be responsible for supporting the whole genome sequencing pathway for patients. Full training will be given.

The department is based at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in the heart of Bloomsbury and serves a population of approximately million people in North and East London, as well as across Essex and parts of Hertfordshire. We work closely with the North Thames Genomics Laboratory Hub (GLH) as well as other GLH's across the country to deliver a high-quality service to our region.

We are a fully electronic service using the EPIC electronic patient record system and all staff are provided with laptops and equipment to facilitate off-site working. This allowed us to seamlessly adapt to the challenges of home working during the COVID-19 pandemic to continue to deliver our service to our patients. We continue to adapt to new ways of working. We are likely to continue to adopt a hybrid working model in future.

Applicant must have a level 4 apprenticeship in healthcare science (or equivalent). They must be able to communicate effectively and sensitively with patients and their families, work well in a multi-professional team, have excellent time management and organisational skills.

Main duties of the job

The postholder of this permanent post will be expected to support the work of the clinical genetics team including requesting family information and results to aid in the counselling of patients and their families. You will also be responsible for supporting the WGS pathway for patients, for liaising with external laboratories to obtain samples and to send them for testing and maintaining a tracking system for these samples Preparing clinical data prior to a patient attending clinic. This involves prolonged period of concentration several times a day

Gathering information from families in a sensitive and caring manner, often at difficult times for people; when they are bereaved, or severely unwell, or perhaps dying themselves.

To act as a support system for genetic counsellors/consultants in the WGS patient pathway from the point of patient registration to obtaining informed consent from families ensuring a smooth collection of record of discussion (ROD) required for WGS testing Provide guidance and support for referring clinicians requesting whole genome sequencing Ensure equity of access to information and risk assessment by identifying extra support for patients whose English may not be their first language or who have a disability and may require additional support use of interpreters, involvement of learning disability nurse specialist
