This is an exciting opportunity to work within the Genomics Unit (GU) to develop the overarching policies and strategies for the NHS Genomic Medicine Service (GMS), as part of a fixed term maternity cover.

The NHS Genomic Medicine Service (GMS) is world leading through the introduction of cutting-edge genomic technologies, including whole genome sequencing into routine care in the NHS. The NHS GMS builds upon the NHS contribution to the 100,000 Genomes Project and is central to the delivery of the NHS Long Term Plan commitments on genomics and the NHS Genomics Strategy. The NHS GMS encompasses establishing genomics in routine clinical care, ongoing genomic transformation projects, and research both nationally and internationally.

This post plays a pivotal role in supporting the GU Senior Management Team including the Deputy Director, Genomics Policy and Commissioning and the Senior Responsible Officer for Genomics. The post directly manages 3 policy and strategy colleagues and works closely to support the governance and communications functions of the GU.

The post holder will work as part of a dynamic team and take the lead in shaping NHS England’s policy on the use of genomic and phenotypic data to improve the delivery of services and patient outcomes.

The Head of Policy and Strategy will act as an advocate for the development of Genomic Medicine policy across the NHS and will promote engagement with the clinical, data policy, and research communities. Key aspects of this role will be to:
- Ensure the strategy is formulated, understood by all stakeholders and is delivered utilising all available resources efficiently and effectively;
- Ensure the development and management of plans within the GU;
- Design high level frameworks and in-depth assessments to understand challenges/ opportunities and options for action;
- Lead cross-functional policy development as required;
- Provide strategic leadership of the NHS Genomic Networks of Excellence programme;
- Lead on the NHS England genomics input into key cross government strategies and reporting against deliverables;
- Proactively manage the key risks and issues associated with ensuring appropriate actions are taken to mitigate or respond;
- Manage the budgetary implications of activity;
- Manage and actively promote the relationships with key stakeholders.

Salary Progression

Applicants will commence at the bottom of Band 8d with a full-time starting salary of £83, 571, with a pay step increase after 5 years’ service.

This is offered in accordance with NHS Terms and Conditions and is based on office location.
