General Manager: Museum in Cornwall

A new museum celebrating the history of a prominent historical figure, internationally and specifically in South African history, is opening in St Ive, near Liskeard, Cornwall (UK), has an exciting opportunity for a South African to relocate to the UK to fulfill the position of general manager.

The role includes overseeing the visitor attraction shop, museum experience, kitchen garden, and restaurant.

Requirements:

  • Food and beverage, and hotel working experience 
  • A qualification in hospitality management or business management.
  • Relevant experience in hotel management, restaurant management, or visitor attraction management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to manage a team.
  • Experience in financial management.
  • A passionate disposition and the ability to maintain high standards under pressure.
  • Fluent in English and Afrikaans (Afrikaans home language).
  • An interest in South African history will be advantageous.

Responsibilities:

  • Building and leading a team of personnel who will facilitate visitor attractions across various departments (exhibitions, restaurant, maintenance).
  • Creating and facilitating a unique guest experience.
  • Upkeep of all museum installations, some of which could be technically complex.
  • Overseeing the management of the restaurant team.
  • Managing site maintenance, including gardens and grounds.
  • Defining long-term goals, developing business models, and implementing such plans.
  • Building on employee strengths and positioning teams accordingly.
  • Managing suppliers and building strong community relations.
  • Managing the museum’s operations and budget.
  • Managing the museum’s marketing, public relations, and community engagement.

Remuneration:

  • A competitive salary annual package.
  • Accommodation will be provided for the candidate and his/her family.
  • Priority South Africans who live in the UK.
  • Assistance will be provided with permits/visas where needed (sponsorship will be provided to ensure the candidate does not personally cover financial costs of relocating)

Starting date: As soon as possible

Location: St Ive, Cornwall. 

Position type: full time or part time depending on the ideal candidate's preferred working structure and salary expectation.

Salary offered: Negotiable and depending on experience.
