Main duties of the job

Working strictly in accordance with guidelinesand protocols, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepunctureto obtain blood samples from patients referred by Hillingdon General Practiceswho work with The Confederation.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To be able to collect blood samples frompatients ages 2-13(as per the spec). Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable andrelaxed as possible. Ensure consentfor venepuncture is sought from the parent and/or patient, where applicable. Collection of samples of blood in accordancewith training and procedures. Ensuring samples are stored in appropriatecontainers. Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirmpatient identity. Checking patient identification againstGP/nurse request and confirming with patient whenever possible. Recording collection of blood sample in patientrecord in accordance with procedure. Ensuring that samples are dispatched to theappropriate laboratories in a timely fashion. Ensuring that anomalies are reported to asenior member of staff. Notifying the GP/nurse of any significantpatient issues. Liaising with and assisting members of theadministrative team. Work effectively within the team. Standard Maintenance. Report any clinical or environmental issues ofconcern and take action to rectify these where appropriate. Ensure a working knowledge and compliance withPolicies and Procedures. Check and re-stock clinical rooms (including specimen bottles, holders, syringes, needles, andspecimen bags). Comply with infection prevention and controlprocedures. Keep clinical areas clean and free fromclutter. Keep mandatory training up to date, includingInformation Governance. Input information into the clinical system asappropriate following appropriate training. Communicate effectively with other team members.

Communicate effectively with patients andcarers.

Recognize peoples needs for alternativemethods of communication and respond accordingly, including use of interpreters. Alert other team members to issues of qualityand risk.
