Job summary

To work as part of the Cellular Pathology team involved in the technical preparation of specimens and performing defined procedures in accordance with standard operating procedures. This will include all aspects of the routine service provided by the department.

Main duties of the job

All tasks will be completed following departmental standard operating procedures. The post holder will undergo a period of training then will work unsupervised once deemed Reception of specimens. Reception includes collection of specimens from pathology reception, data matching between specimen containers and request forms, coding samples, sorting into the correct workstream, and identification of specimens which must be rejected. Rejected samples must be resolved and Set up, and clean down, of dissection area, ensuring all required equipment/consumables are available and correct cleaning/disinfection methods are used. May involve some exposure to sharps ( scalpelblades, dissection knives).3. Assist with the process of specimen dissection. This involves writing medical dictation for occasionally long periods of time, and checking patient and specimen Assist with the process of specimen dissection. Store specimens awaiting disposal correctly, following departmental protocol. Identification of specimens ready for disposal. Disposal of specimens in a safe manner, including those requiring non-standard disposal ( POCs).

Job responsibilities

To participate in the routine work of all sections within the department to provide our users with accurate and timely results.

To perform routine tasks covering a variety of equipment and manual techniques.

To ensure that all tasks are performed in accordance with current Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and regulations to ensure a high quality service at all times.

To ensure that equipment is properly maintained on a day to day basis and operated in accordance with laboratory and manufacturers SOPs.

To assist in the running of the digital pathology documentation of specimens, including entry of computerised handling, processing and disposal of histological and cytological material.Assisting staff during specimen dissection by taking notes, preparing extra cassettes and checking patient details.Maintain the laboratory filing system, including retrieval of off-site storage and disposal of selected material.

To co-ordinate the sending and return of referral work to external providers.

To co-ordinate the escalation of urgent work and to respond to enquiries.

To co-ordinate and prepare cases for MDT review. Work with others to ensure a safe, efficient and effective service.

To maintain confidentiality at all times relating to patients, staff and the Trust in line with departmental and Trust policies.

To adhere to the requirements of the Data Protection Act and to treat with discretion, avoiding disclosure to unauthorised individuals, all confidential and other information acquired.

To liaise with all other pathology staff and other members of staff within the Trust at an appropriate level to ensure high standards of communication and cooperation.

To be conversant with the use of the pathology IT system and report any problems to either senior staff or the IT helpdesk.

To work within the Trust and departmental safety policies and report any hazards to the departmental safety representative or senior staff.

To make positive efforts to promote your own personal safety and that of others.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

oGCSE (or equivalent) English and Maths

Desirable

oScience A-levels (or equivalent): Biology, Chemistry, Physics oNVQ L3 in a laboratory-based discipline oIBMS Certificate of Achievement for Biomedical Science Support Staff, part I or II.

Experience

Essential

oExperience of successfully working in a busy, multi-factorial role.

Desirable

oExperience of working in a pathology department oExperience in Cytology and/or Histology oExperience in a customer service role.

Knowledge

Essential

oAbility to communicate effectively and sensitively. oGood time management. oAbility to work independently and take direction and to pass on information accurately and timely. oAble to build effective working relationships with staff and colleagues.
