Job summary

The post holder will support all activities to ensure the organisation meets its safeguarding responsibilities in regard to pregnant women/birthing people, new mothers/birthing people and unborn and new-born babies within the care of the acute and community services.

The post holder will play a key operational role in the delivery of the safeguarding maternity agenda in accordance with national and local guidance and legislation.

Main duties of the job

Provide leadership and assurance regarding the safeguarding arrangements, seeking assurances from and holding to account services regarding their safeguarding responsibilities.

Provide expert knowledge and advice consistent with the requirements of the Children Act 1989 and 2004 and Working Together 2018.

Work closely with the organisations Named professionals and senior management team in delivering the think family agenda.

Provide highly specialised advice and support to the Midwifery Team and the wider organisation about all aspects of safeguarding work with particular reference to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Mental Health, Domestic Abuse, Substance and Alcohol Misuse and Learning Disability.

Work across the multi-agency arena, providing highly specialist knowledge regarding the issues affecting the health and wellbeing of women and children and support the Safeguarding Partnership in its functions.

Develop and maintain relationships with partner agencies, overcoming barriers and professional challenge to improve outcomes for women and children in need of early help and those in need of protection

Job responsibilities

Demonstrate exceptional leadership to all Trust staff to ensure excellence in safeguarding is embedded throughout Stockport Foundation Trust.

Provide specialist Maternity advice and direction on strategic and operational issues informing senior managers and working with service leads and practitioners in the Trust, and also colleagues in the Local Authorities to maintain a community wide focus.

Provide highly expert advice and support on all areas of safeguarding work with particular reference to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), mental health, domestic abuse, substance and alcohol misuse and learning disability.

Represent the organisation as the lead for FGM (ensuring compliance with data collection) providing training and expertise to staff across the Trust.

Midwifery lead for Domestic Abuse providing training and expertise to staff across the Trust and supporting the development of policy and guidance.

Takes the lead with the Prevent agenda and training programme within maternity services.

Ensure that Safeguarding processes are robustly embedded and monitored within the Trusts maternity clinical governance and safeguarding framework.

Lead, develop, implement and maintain a robust safeguarding supervision provision across the Trust maternity service that facilitates highly complex, contentious, sensitive and high-risk decision making.

Attend child protection conferences (where necessary)/strategy meetings and other interagency meetings and/or supports practitioners who are required to attend.

Collaborate with Trust legal services to advise and support staff in the preparation of statements and other reports in relation to legal proceedings ensuring safe sharing of information in line with Local Safeguarding Board procedures, Data Protection Act, Human Rights Act and Caldicott guidance.

Advise, support and attend court (where necessary) with staff who are required to give evidence and to seek legal advice as required.

Work collaboratively with the Named professionals to develop a safeguarding families approach to safeguarding based on the principles of holistic lifelong care.

Develop safeguarding policies and procedures in relation to Maternity, overseeing the implementation and compliance locally and across the organisation.

Work closely with the Designated Professionals, Locality Managers, Heads of Service, and staff to ensure effective implementation of Local Safeguarding Childrens Partnerships Policies, procedures, guidelines, & protocols for Safeguarding in maternity services within the Foundation Trust.

Registered Midwife (RM NMC registration) Safeguarding experience with a minimum of 2 years' experience in a specialist safeguarding role.
