This is a post for 12 months or one academic year (as preferred by applicant). It is available as a secondment to Whittington Health employees (if agreed by current line manager).
The post holder will be a Senior CAMHS clinician in Specialist Secondary Schools in Islington, within the CAMHS neurodevelopmental team, and within the smaller and highly dedicated team of specialist schools clinicians who will support the post holder. They will be based in 1 or 2 schools alongside one of our experienced special school clinicians. This is a development opportunity for someone with experience in school or working with learning disabled and/or autistic people who would like to work in this specialist school setting. The applicant should be passionate about working with special schools and disabled children, and committed to making mental health services accessible to this population. They should be experienced in delivering a range of direct and indirect interventions and managing the complexity and range of mental health work in multi-agency settings.

Main duties of the job
Working into the specialist schools means that the post holder will be working with learning disabled and autistic children and young people. The schools are highly specialist provisions for young people. Some of the students may engage in behaviours that could cause harm to themselves or to others around them. The schools can be emotional places to work, and we support this through a specialist school case discussion group, reflective practice groups within the school cites facilitated by a school lead or the team manager, and team away days as well as informal support.
The post holder should be a clinician who is passionate about making mental health services accessible to vulnerable families.

Job responsibilities
The main areas of responsibility are as follows
Working to deliver a CAMH service within the school in order to improve the mental health of pupils Providing consultation and training to school staff Liaision with professional networks Attend the special schools case discussion group (1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month 10:45-11:45) A key part of the post holders role will be to understand the underlying needs that lead to behaviours that cause concern, and support the network in planning and implementing interventions to create change. Assessment and direct work with families Supporting non-health staff members in assessing, understanding and managing mental health difficulties and clinical risk in young people. Supporting the implementation of a positive behaviour support model across the network by modelling this in network meetings with other services, childrens social care, short break providers, etc.We are looking for someone who can work effectively with young people aged 4-18 and their families, applying their skills to work with parents with mental health difficulties as needed, in complex systems and with school staff. Experience of working in schools is essential.
The post holder will be required to work flexibly, independently and responsively within a fast paced school environment.

A professional qualification in Clinical Psychology, Art Psychotherapy, Systemic Family Therapy or Mental Health/LD nursing, with registration with an appropriate professional body ( HCPC)
Knowledge & Experience

Experience of generic and discipline specific mental health assessments and treatments of children, adolescents and their families in community settings Experience of undertaking complex family work and of managing risk and vulnerability in community settings High level knowledge of the theory and practice of psychological interventions, and their application in community settings. Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health, education and the children Act and Child protection. Knowledge and skills in the delivery of a family based approach and intervention, including work alongside the needs of vulnerable adults Understands the importance of assessment that explores and considers individual cultural identity and associated support needs.
