Job Purpose Monday to Friday 8:30-4:30

The role will be within the adult community Speech & Language Therapy service in Brent. The post holderwill be an autonomous practitioner providing specialist speech and language therapy services to a widevariety of clients with complex needs. A significant proportion of these clients will have English as anadditional language (EAL). They will be expected to manage their own caseload but will work in amultidisciplinary environment and receive regular supervision. To support with the management of patientswith dysphagia they will have access to VFS/FEES as post has responsibility for providing domiciliary and outpatient care to patients in the Borough of role covers a variety of settings including clients' homes, out-patient clinics, residential and communityfacilities. They will be an integral member of the multidisciplinary team working collaboratively to ensurespecialist therapy programmes and care plans are in place for the clients under their care. Furthermore,they will be expected to build and maintain key working relationships with those referring into the serviceand have effective communication working with patients / clients, parents / carers and with colleagues inHealth, the Voluntary Sector and Social Services. This will include planning, delivering and evaluatingspecialist training within a range of settings to other professionals on all aspects of Speech and LanguageTherapy.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support self and servicedevelopment through active participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Additionally, theywill provide supervision to junior SLTs and SLT students and support with development of staff within theBrent SLT team.

Job responsibilities

To prioritise and manage a mainly neurological caseload independently, making differential diagnosis & clinical management decisions on the basis of evidence from assessment frequently weighing up complex clinical management decisions in the context of conflicting clinical indicators, with clinical supervision from the Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist. To analyse auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of clients communication and to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness in the home, at work and other relevant settings To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by developing and implementing Specialist Speech and Language Therapy Treatment evidence based practice programmes providing thorough evaluation of clinical outcomes. To use clinical judgement and specialist skills to evaluate deterioration in clients health status communicating effectively the appropriate professionals in a timely manner To demonstrate skills in motivating clients and /or carers to engage in the therapeutic process. To develop clear unidisciplinary / multidisciplinary clinical protocols based on best practice Person Specification

Education/Qualification

Essential

Degree and Licence to Practise from the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT

Experience

Essential

Experience of supporting CYP, families and schools in line with the Children and Families Act 2014 including contribution to statutory assessments (Education Health and Care Plan Needs Assessments), contribution to the annual review process and delivery of SLT provision as specified in Education health and Care Plans (EHCPs) Collaborative work with parents and other professionals Experience Training others

Desirable

Interest to develop clinical specialism in education Training/experience of supporting students and more junior qualified therapists including provision of supervision and line management

Skills & Knowledge

Essential

Excellent Interpersonal skills including observation, listening and empathy Understanding of typical child development Speech and Language, Play and other milestones Good working knowledge of appropriate range of assessments and interventions for school aged CYP with Speech, Language and Communication needs and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits to individual CYP Awareness of national policies and procedures (relevant to the Education) Good understanding of the roles of other professionals (relevant to the client group)

Desirable

Ability to organise and manage own caseload independently and support other more junior staff manage their caseload.
