Job overview

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an Occupational Therapist with an interest and experience in neurology to join the Tower Hamlets Community Neuro Team (THCNT). You will be part of a large, friendly and successful multidisciplinary team, based at Mile End Hospital, delivering neurological rehabilitation and disability management to patients in their own homes or in our neuro gym / clinic room on-site.

You will be responsible for assessing and providing intervention to people with a range of neurological conditions, some life limiting, determining neurological and functional deficits and the treatment program required.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for neurological Occupational Therapy, excellent communication skills, plenty of initiative and enthusiasm, and with the ability to work autonomously and as a part of a wider MDT.

Within Bart’s, we offer a robust teaching and training programme with the opportunity to complete quality improvement and audit projects and we provide a supportive and engaging environment to develop and grow our therapists. You will have the opportunity to develop your own supervisory skills through supporting and supervising students and/or rehabilitation support workers.

Main duties of the job

To provide specialist assessment and intervention to clients with neurological conditions, determining neurological impairment, activity limitation and participation / role restrictions and develop the occupational therapy treatment program required.

To work in an integrated way with inter team colleagues and external agencies spanning acute, primary care, community health services and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

To participate in the continued service development of the Tower Hamlets Community Neuro Team (THCNT).

Essential criteria

Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy State registered (HCPC) Evidence of a CPD portfolio

Desirable criteria

Member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists Involvement in a relevant RCOT special clinical interest group (e.g. Specialist Section for Neurological Practice) Post graduate courses relevant to neurological rehabilitation or disability management Supervision training Fieldwork educators training

Experience

Essential criteria

Clinical experience in the NHS or similar health service across a range of acute/rehab settings. Clinical experience in the field of Neurology. Experience of working in a Multidisciplinary Team. Experience of working with people with life limiting disease. Experience of working with interpreters and / or health advocates. Experience of contributing to professional development / clinical education of junior staff, students and assistants. Experience of contributing to audit / service improvement projects and working to timescale.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

Knowledge of a range of neurological conditions and the impairments and functional difficulties which they may cause. Knowledge of key available treatment options (and their evidence base) in neurorehabilitation / disability management e.g. repetitive task training, cognitive rehabilitation, fatigue management, splinting and prescription of equipment / minor adaptations. Understanding of the legal responsibilities of the profession. Understanding of Clinical Governance and its implications for occupational therapy and client care.

Desirable criteria

Knowledge of local community services and agencies. Understanding of National Service Frameworks, NICE guidelines and national strategy documents and their implementation in practice

Skills

Essential criteria

Ability to undertake comprehensive standardised and non-standardised assessments of motor, sensory and cognitive skills. Ability to carry out risk assessments. Ability to assess for and review assistive or rehabilitative equipment. This includes safe handling, fitting and demonstration. Ability to maintain accurate electronic patient records. Ability to organise, prioritise and delegate. Good problem-solving skills Ability to supervise and develop others. Ability to meet the physical demands of the job on a day-to-day basis. Demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and verbal, in a clear and logical manner. Ability to deliver sensitive information and communicate with clients in an empathetic manner regarding their treatment, despite communication barriers. Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment. Ability to work flexibly to meet the demands of the service. Proficient IT skills.
