An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the maternity services as a Clinical Educator Maternity Support Worker.

The post holder will assist the multi-professional team in the provision of high quality, effective and compassionate family-centred maternity service; to ensure optimal care for women, their babies and their families.

To provide support and education to Maternity Support Workers, from initial recruitment, during induction and on-going development.

Be a role model in high standards of clinical practice and leadership; ensuring that maternity support workers also provide a high standard of practice which is based on current evidence, guidelines and policies.

Assist in the implementation of new guidelines and initiatives from both local and national requirements across all areas of maternity services.

Be flexible in meeting the needs of the service and when required, supporting midwives and the wider team in providing direct clinical care to women and babies (see appendix 1)

Have a visible presence in the clinical environment and provide one to one support and education for the maternity support workers.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible, alongside the Maternity Training Team, for the educational and training support of the whole multi-professional team with a specific emphasis on Maternity Support Workers.

They will take responsibility for the practical orientation /induction of newly appointed Maternity Support Workers. Support colleagues to maintain essential skills following appropriate training.

They will undertake an active role in the provision of practice based education and training for staff within maternity services, facilitating PROMPT training, skills drills and other study days, and work effectively as part of the Maternity Training Team to cover training needs of staff across all areas within Maternity Services at ELHT.

Create effective and supportive relationships with women and their families to enhance the provision of personalised and safe woman-centred care.

Understands the MSW’s scope of practice and works within limits of own competence and authority.

Contribute positively to a culture of team working, maintaining effective working relationships to maximise quality of care.

Notice and respond appropriately to the changing needs of the woman and her family.

Promote a culture of health and well-being through providing information, advice and support to enable healthy lifestyle choices for all, whilst understanding the causes of ill-health related to women of childbearing age and their families.

Actively engage with public health initiatives.

Communicate clearly and accurately using a range of written, verbal and non-verbal methods, maintaining confidentiality and upholding the principles of data protection at all times.

Maintain and develop knowledge, skills and behaviours through training and education to include local mandatory training.

Work within organisational policies and procedures to ensure maintenance of safe working practices for women, their families and colleagues.

Assist in the maintenance of a safe working environment through the efficient use of resources to support the smooth running of the area, having due regard for the health, safety and welfare of self and others.

Recognise and respect equality and diversity, demonstrating an inclusive approach in all environments.

Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria
  • Care certificate
  • 5 GCSE's grade C/5 including English and Maths or equivalent qualification
  • NVQ 3 or equivalent and commitment to development within role and higher education
  • Evidence of completion of MSW band 3 competencies
  • NVQ 4 or equivalent foundation degree in health and social care
Experience Essential criteria
  • Previous experience in a support worker role
  • Experience of working with newborn infants
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills
  • Experience with hospital discharge processes
  • Excel experience
  • Knowledge of NHS/hospital systems
  • Leadership/management qualification
Knowledge and skills Essential criteria
  • Basic computer/IT skills
  • Ability to perform physiological observations on adults and newborns
  • Competent in venepuncture
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership skills and independent working
  • Demonstrates an understanding of creating a positive learning environment

  • Understanding of how to formulate/follow a care plan
  • Understands the rationale for risk assessments and how to escalate concerns
  • Have a sympathetic/sensitive approach and be able to speak effectively to staff, colleagues and patients
