We are looking for an enthusiastic individualwith a passion for training and development to join the Cellular Pathology department as TrainingManager.
This rewarding role offers the excitingopportunity to promote and develop the learning culture within CellularPathology.
You will work closely with the Service Manager,Operational Leads and advanced Biomedical Scientists to ensure the effectivedevelopment and implementation of training. High qualitystaff training and development is crucial to support service delivery. Weare looking for a dynamic, organised individual who is able to communicate witha wide array of staff, as well as someone who is able to work well within ateam and who can also work autonomously when needed.
Applicants must be registered with the HCPC andhave extensive post registration experience as a Biomedical Scientist withinCellular Pathology. A training and development qualification isdesirable. Applicants should hold a relevant level 7 qualification relevantmasters degree, IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma. Applications from thoserequiring a level 7 qualification may be considered under annexe 21 band 7,whereby the completion of a relevant qualification would be supported.
The department operates Mondayto Saturday 7:30 to 7:30 with standard day and extended day shifts.
Main duties of the job
Examples of general duties will include:
Advising staff on the completion of IBMS portfolios and evidence types
Setting questions/marking work for IBMS portfolios
Ensuring that training timescales are met and performance is managed
Managing training for technical, admin and clerical/secretarial staff
Providing & organising lectures to technical, scientific and medical staff
Supporting & promoting CPD
Overseeing the training & competency system & software as a super-user, and training staff in how to use this
Retain competencies in the relevant discipline of work in order to provide hands on training for staff.
Ensuring that staff training competencies are recorded accurately, verified, signed off in a timely manner and monitored against agreed KPIs.
Carry out training/learning needs analysis
Attend relevant meetings and actively participate in the Pathology Training & Development Group
Staff Rotas
Attendance management, appraisal, minor disciplinary
About us
The department provides Histopathology, Non Gynae Cytology, Andrology, Muscle, Nerve, Immunohistochemistry, Molecular, and Mortuary services for Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and surrounding primary care centres.
We are a well equipped and innovative department being the first laboratory in the UK digitally scanning 100% of surgical slides, also introducing the UK's first automated tissue sectioners. We process circa 60,000 surgical cases, 3000 andrology cases, 2,000 autopsy cases and 6000 non-gynaecological cytology cases per annum. We are a regional Cellular Pathology Genomics Centre.
The department has appointed a Transformation Lead to support with development of the service and is also supported by a Pathology Technology & Innovation Lead

JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY
Pathology Discipline Training Managers provide best practice advice and training management support within a designated area reporting into Service Managers/Operational Leads.
Their job purpose is to:
Manage all formal pre-registration and post-registration training within the department liaising with other staff as appropriate. Act as the focal point for all issues relating to training and development within the specialty. Facilitate the dissemination of training, competency assessment and development principles and promote a culture of training development amongst staff. Support and promote a continued professional development (CPD) programme within the department.
Support compliance against Trust mandatory training targets, receive and distribute Trust training reports across their Pathology specialty including competency performance.
Actively contribute towards the general management and development of the department within nationally accepted standards (such as UKAS). Ensure all relevant documentation meets the appropriate standards of all accreditation and professional bodies on all hospital sites within Pathology at LTHT. Maintains the registered training status of the department with the appropriate professional bodies.
Develop and promote training management systems within the department and ensure that they are up to date and staff training competencies are recorded accurately, verified and signed off in a timely manner and monitor progress against agreed KPIs. To regularly carry out learning needs analysis to identifying gaps in skills and competencies and identify relevant training to support future planning of services
Through participation in the Pathology Training & Development Group provide an effective communication channel between Pathology and their specialty department. Raise awareness and promote training improvement activities and career opportunities within Pathology and their department.
To fulfil your people governance responsibilities you will be required to undergo appropriate HR training, for example, in supervisory management. As a senior staff member you will be required to assist in the general management of the department, for example in areas such as basic HR functions, appraisal, incident investigation etc. Any training required for this will be provided, computer skills are essential to carry out your work
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
In order to work effectively in the role you as the post holder must be able to demonstrate a number of attributes and abilities. Principal duties and areas of responsibility may include the following:
Having reached the professional level of qualifications and experience of an Advanced Biomedical Scientist the post holder will continue to retain their competencies in their relevant discipline of work.
Responsibility for planning training in your given discipline, formulating training plans, securing approval, working with laboratory leadership to implement and monitoring training plan compliance.
As a member of the Pathology Training & Development Group contribute to the assessment, development, agreement and implementation of competency assessment in a standardised format and subsequent storage of such information
Supporting Service Managers and Operational Leads in the general management of the department.
Contributing towards overall service improvement of the department within nationally accepted standards (UKAS) by actively participating in the development of policies and you will lead the implementation of these policies in your specialist area.
The post holder will occasionally be involved in the validation and authorisation of results and will be expected to apply professional judgements and specialist skills to technically complex and sometimes difficult situations.
Communicating complex scientific/technical information to students, colleagues, other healthcare staff, and other organisations.
Scientific practice and research
Horizon scanning to research and maintain an in-depth knowledge of contemporary methods and analytical equipment in the area of scientific expertise.
To provide lecturing/training to technical, scientific and medical staff. This may be internal within LTHT or externally at other organisations.
To maintain an awareness of and give advice regarding the procurement of scientific equipment relevant to the area of expertise.
To enter, manage, retrieve and interpret complex patient information using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
To actively participate in the laboratory quality assurance and risk management programmes
Governance tasks:
Oversight of training competencies requires the post holder to evaluate, review and update relevant standard operating procedures to support LTHT Pathology UKAS accreditation
Reporting adverse events in accordance with Trust risk management procedures
Supervisory and management tasks:
Participates in PTDG meetings providing updates on behalf of discipline, escalating concerns and highlighting opportunities to the wider group
Participate in the recruitment and selection process for posts within the area of scientific expertise, in support of Service Managers/Operational Leads
Contribute to the performance appraisal process in support of Service Managers/Operational Leads
Give technical, scientific, professional and career advice to more junior members of staff when requested
Support recruitment to the Pathology profession by providing input to schools and college career fairs
Advise managers and individual staff members regarding training and development needs
Finance
Safe use of expensive and highly complex equipment when working in the laboratory environment
Training Systems
Oversee the training and competency system and software as a super-user
Update the training and competency system as required, uploading new training and competencies and removing as required
Oversee development, monitoring and quality/compliance aspects of training system
Authorise and approve training and competencies
Identify future needs the Pathology CSU will require from the training and competency system
Generate system produced reports to identify gaps in competencies
Strategy and operational planning
Support Service Managers/Operational Leads in the development of operational and strategic plans identifying suitable training to address skills/competency gaps
Supports future workforce planning of education development programmes providing advice to Service Managers/Operational Leads of available funding streams
Put forward cases for funding for training to support the future needs of the Pathology CSU
Contribute to the development of business cases for training when required
Technical tasks during processing of pathology samples (ad-hoc)
The following describes the range of duties associated with the routine processing of samples as required:
Assessing suitability and urgency of pathology samples. Assigning relevant tests and investigations.
Prioritising, performing, interpreting, validating and authorizing specialist investigations according to standard operating procedures.
Identifying abnormal clinical results
Providing technical update information to groups of staff working in the section/department
Ensuring that quality standards of the section/department are met
Assessing and comparing new equipment and procedures against existing practices

To maintain registered status with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) or other applicable professional bodies
Actively remain up to date with their own training and working practices within specific discipline and to support the management of the Pathology CSU

You will maintain registration with the HCPC as a biomedical scientist and abide by the HCPC standards of proficiency, assuring the quality of your work for patients. In contributing to the quality of a technical clinical service you will understand the requirement to continuously develop appropriate skills and accumulate relevant knowledge whether by formal or in- house training.
