University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) is looking for 2 experienced and compassionate nurses with a strong interest in helping patients with managing acute and chronic pain symptoms.

The post holders will be required to act as clinical experts, directly and indirectly influencing all aspects of care and management of patients' pain both post operatively and for those with complex medical pain requirements.

UHL consists of three large, busy hospitals in and around the city centre; which cover the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland areas. The post holders will primarily be based at LRI and Glenfield but travel between all sites will be required.

The successful post holders will be capable of using their initiative to manage their own case load of patients initiating and evaluating treatments and will work closely with the multidisciplinary team and the patient. The successful applicants will require excellent communication skills in order to provide the best possible outcomes and will act as role models providing training and education around pain management to the patients and hospital staff.

Experience with the pain patient would be an advantage; and an interest in research around pain management and non-medical therapies to improve pain would also be desirable.

Main duties of the job

Act as the clinical expert and professional resource to the patients and carers and multi-professional team, within the specialist acute pain service. Work alongside other specialist nurses, Matrons and Head of Nursing to ensure the development and delivery of a high quality service. Directly or indirectly influence all aspects of care and management of patients within the pain service Deliver high quality, clinically effective care, and patient experience, utilising research an in collaboration with colleagues in everyday practice. Act as a role model and clinical resource demonstrating high standards of care and providing clinical leadership in the specialist area. Support the development and delivery of a programme of practice and professional development for staff within the speciality. Take responsibility for own development and participate in annual appraisal To suggest plan and implement methods of improving office systems and methods of work

Job responsibilities

Manage a delegated caseload of patients, as appropriate within the speciality, delivering individualised and personalised direct patient care. Provide clinical expertise, specialist advice and support across the whole spectrum of the service. Demonstrate in depth specialist knowledge, skills and innovative practice in the specialist area, ensuring the delivery of appropriate evidence based care. Support, assist and encourage the multi-disciplinary team in resolving complex patient problems, by the provision of new and innovative models of case management. Demonstrate appropriate expert practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. This will necessitate high levels of autonomy and advocacy.

Education and Qualifications

Essential

RGN/Midwife - First Level Recognised Teaching Qualification Evidence of post-registration educational and continued professional development including attendance of the acute pain study day and relevant competencies

Desirable

Recordable specialist qualification at Degree level Clinical Leadership Programme

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

Extensive Post-Reg experience including a number of years relevant clinical experience at Band 5 or above in Acute or Chronic Pain Management Successfully completed LCAT assessments for Acute Pain Management (IV PCA, Epidural Analgesia and Local Anaesthetic Infusions)

Desirable

Participation in Research as well as development of multi-disciplinary working practices Demonstrates experience of clinical risk management

Skils and Ability

Essential

Effective communicator Recognition of own limitations, able to work on own initiative and in a team Leadership and motivational skills

Desirable
