Job summary

We are looking for a skilled, enthusiastic andmotivated Speech and Language Therapist with an interest or existing specialismin Paediatrics. We welcome applicants who are newly qualified to help us buildand expand our current Speech and Language Therapy team of qualified staff andassistants.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for delivering Speechand Language Therapy assessments and interventions to children with a varietyof developmental disorders. Youwill be responsible for developing Total Communication and managing your owncaseload. You willwork closely with families and with other professionals to provide an excellentquality of care and to act as a source of information, support and advice.

Job responsibilities

Mainduties and responsibilities:

- To assess and evaluate thecommunication skills of students and to liaise with team members.

- To determine aims and objectives forthe development of communication skills for each individual in co-operationwith education and therapy colleagues.

- To co-develop and deliver specialistprogrammes to enable students to access the curriculum and achieve theirindividual learning goals.

- To select vocabulary and manage themaintenance of low and high tech communication aids used by individual studentsand to support and develop students functional use of communication systemswithin the school environment.

- To plan, lead and supervisecommunication sessions for groups of students..

- To attend meetings as required andliaise closely with all colleagues within the Multidisciplinary Team.

- To explain the aims and methods ofmanagement and involve the individual (where appropriate) in discussion withparents/ guardians and carers.

- To act in an advisory capacity oncommunication and associated skills, as required.

- To keep up-to-date written studentrecords and personal clinical observations.

- To provide an initial assessment forpotential new students and write accompanying reports to establish a baselineand exceptional funding information, with relation to SaLT for each individual.To provide subsequent progress reports.

- To plan and prioritise own clientworkload.

- To order equipment, as appropriate.

- To contribute to departmental researchand development activities.

- To propose policy and proceduralchanges for own specialist area. To fully contribute to the Schools qualityassurance processes and procedures.

- To co-supervise the work of assistantsand students.

- To provide clinical support for Speechand Language Therapy Assistants and students.

- To participate in the delivery ofin-house training courses.

- To become aware of new developments inthe field and to participate in the exchange of ideas.

- To ensure own continuous professionaldevelopment.

- To be accountable for own professionalactions: not directly supervised, work within codes of practice, professionalguidelines and policies.

- To supervise less experiencedtherapists, assistants and students, as appropriate.

- To perform such additional dutiescommensurate with the post of Speech and Language Therapist as required by theHead of SaLT, Head of Therapies, or Head Teacher.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

-Diploma or degree in Speech and Language Therapy -HCPC registered -Some experience working with children & young adults -Computer & IT skills -Working in a multidisciplinary or multiagency team

Desirable

Ideally you will have some experience of working with children either in a special school or within a paediatric speech and language therapy setting. Additional qualifications/experience within the field of dysphagia and AAC would be an advantage but is not essential.
