Job description

Job responsibilities

The BASTU service at UHB supports the supra-regional Orthopedic Oncology Service which is a vital part of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH) and the Midland Abdominal and Retroperitoneal/Pelvic Sarcoma Unit (MARSU).

The service deals with all types of surgical specimens of both extremities and retroperitoneum and serves as tertiary referral center for the region as well as provides second opinions.

The highly specialised workload allows excellent opportunities for sarcoma research and the service is involved in Pathology review work for the MRC bone and tissue sarcoma clinical trials committees.

The successful candidate would have the opportunity to work under the supervision of consultant histopathologists developing their skills and knowledge in dissecting and reporting on complex oncological surgical specimens. As their knowledge and skills develop this individual would be expected to supervise junior staff members and work towards independently reporting cases.

UHB Cellular Pathology is accredited by UKAS, holds a HTA licence and is an IBMS approved training laboratory for HCPC Registration and Specialist Training. The Department also participates in UK NEQAS External Quality Assurance Schemes where appropriate. The Department is led by both a Clinical Service Lead (medical) and a Head Biomedical Scientist (technical).

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help shape the future of Cellular Pathology including the Cellular Pathology services across UHB to support increasing activity. The Department works closely with labs across the Birmingham and Solihull 'BSol' network and this includes current setting up of digital pathology and imminent new LIMS implementation.

The post holder will be expected to undertake any training required and to maintain competency including a specialist level understanding of all the processes they participate in and supervise. The department supports Continuing Professional Development opportunities and expect staff to maintain evidence of CPD which should be up to date and relevant to the post.
