As a Senior Design Engineer specialising in Structures, you will be responsible for developing and optimizing the structural components and systems that form the backbone of our vehicles. Working within a collaborative and dynamic environment, you will contribute to various aspects of project execution, from initial design concepts to final product release. This role offers the opportunity to apply your technical expertise and creativity to shape the future of automotive engineering at Gordon Murray Group.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and development of composite body structures, ensuring compliance with performance, safety, and aesthetic standards. 
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the engineering team, fostering innovation and excellence. 
  • Work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including design, aerodynamics, quality, purchasing and manufacturing, to ensure seamless integration of body structures into the project. 
  • Collaborate with materials engineers and suppliers to select and optimize materials for composite components, considering performance, mass, certification/compliance, aesthetics and sustainability. 
  • Define requirements for each system/assembly based on cascaded vehicle level targets and requirements. 
  • Carry out risk assessments and FMEA during the earliest conceptual stages of design to identify risks and help eliminate or reduce failures. 
  • Develop and implement testing and validation protocols to ensure the durability, reliability, and functionality of body composite design. 
  • Create and maintain working level plans, that are communicated with the design team and the project, that manage the delivery of composite components to project timing requirements. 
  • Working knowledge of: Carbon fibre laminate and sandwich structure design. Supplier materials, including fibres, resin systems, sandwich core materials, and bonded assembly adhesive systems. Composite component tools design for manufacturability. 
  • Creating layup manuals to produce components and cure cycle specifications. 
  • Review the composite design process to create design and drawing standards for composite components. 

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Proven experience in the design and engineering of high-performance composite structures. 
  • Bachelor's/Master’s degree in mechanical, automotive, aerospace engineering, or similar 
  • Proven experience as a Senior Engineer with a focus on body composite design, preferably in the Automotive, Motorsport or Aerospace industries. 
  • In-depth knowledge of composite structures design, development, and optimization, with hands-on experience in relevant engineering tools and software. 
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with a track record of successfully leading engineering teams. 
  • A creative thinker with a passion for pushing the boundaries of engineering possibilities. 
  • Organised, persuasive, resourceful, flexible, ambitious, self-directing, passion for delivering objectives, comfortable challenging existing processes. 
  • Clear and effective communication skills with internal and external clients. 
  • Must be a team player.
