Job overview

We would like to appoint a full time deputy Lead Specialist Screening Practitioner to join us within the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme at BHRUT.

You will play a key role in developing a team of SSPs, establishing protocols and guidelines, maintaining key performance indicators thus ensuring the standards laid down by the national Bowel Cancer Screening Programme are met. You will also be expected to maintain and encourage support of patients going through the screening process as part of the deputy role.

Apart from working collaboratively key stakeholders, the post holder will also support the Lead SSP.

Applicants must have excellent communication and decision-making with three years’ experience of appropriate knowledge and experience.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be working within the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) as part of a team based at Queen’s Hospital and King George Hospital. They will provide specialist nursing support assessing patients and co-ordinating individualised care on a Bowel Cancer Screening pathway, meeting emotional, physical and psychological needs. As the Deputy Lead SSP they will deputise for the Lead SSP and oversee SSPs in their daily operational duties. The Deputy Lead SSP will support the Lead SSP and Clinical Programme Manager with training and development of the team’s SSPs and new SSPs coming into post.

We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals and we operate from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Community Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic.

The Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital is one of eight to be ; the Care Quality Commission has raised the ratings for at Queen’s and King George hospitals; and showed that the Trust was the most improved in 2023 for reducing waits for emergency care. 

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also part of the .
