Electronics and Instrumentation Technician(Modern Apprentice)

Job Purpose

To train under the Modern Apprentice programme as an Electronics and Instrumentation Technician working in the Technical Services Organisation of the School of Physics and Astronomy providing technical support for research projects and teaching activities using a wide range of Electronics and related technologies. You will be required to attend a 20-week basic training program at EKGTA training centre in East Kilbride which includes certificated completion of SVQ2 units. Main Duties and Responsibilities 1. To train in an electronics workshop environment under the supervision of senior technical staff learning how to provide electronics technical support for eleven research divisions in the School of Physics and Astronomy. 2. Construction and testing of a range of bespoke electronic equipment and electrical/electro-mechanical assemblies working from designs developed in the electronics workshop or submitted by staff and students. 3. Carry out routine test, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of electronic equipment used throughout the School of Physics and Astronomy. 4. Fabricate printed circuit boards (PCB’s) and operate surface mount pick and place equipment to populate component boards as instructed. 5. Work with CAD packages to prepare electronic designs and printed circuit board layouts under the supervision of a senior technician. 6. Carry out equipment electrical safety tests and update/maintain electronic records systems as directed and comply with prepared risk assessments to meet current health and safety regulations. 7. Learn to operate various technical instruments as required to support research in the School of Physics and Astronomy. 8. Any other appropriate duties as assigned by the technical manager. Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Knowledge/Qualifications Essential A1 Higher or Intermediate 2 in Maths (or National 5) grades A - C plus one other science or technology qualification.
A2 Standard Grade Physics at level two or above, plus two other Standard Grades from English, Chemistry, Biology, Technological studies, Computing or Graphic Communications. Desirable B1 Higher or Intermediate 2 (or National 5) grades A - C in Physics, Electronics, Chemistry or English. Skills Essential C1 Excellent communication skills.
C2 Ability to work accurately and with attention to detail.C3 Ability to work as part of a team.
C4 Ability to follow instructions.C5 Some knowledge of Microsoft windows.
C6 Excellent time keeping.C7 Willingness to undertake relevant Vocational Qualification & FE courses in engineering. Desirable
D1 Willingness to do routine tasks.D2 Willingness to accept supervision.
D3 Good organisational skills.D4 Ability to use initiative.
D5 Willingness to commit to a career as a technician within the University. Experience Essential E1 As this is a training post, no formal experience is required, although some experience in a science/engineering environment, perhaps at school would be relevant.
E2 Must be able to demonstrate that you would benefit from both the work experience and qualification element of the programme. Desirable: F1 Experience of using computers and in dealing with people from school activities, hobbies or volunteer/part-time work is desirable. In these circumstances it necessary to accept high levels of supervision. Terms and Conditions Salary will be Grade 2, £21,900 per annum. This post is full time (35 hours per week) and fixed term for up to 3 years.
