This position is designed for individuals seeking to develop their skills as an Electronics and Instrumentation Technician through a structured apprenticeship program within the Technical Services Organisation of the School of Physics and Astronomy. The role involves providing essential technical assistance for both research initiatives and educational activities utilizing various electronic technologies.
Participants will engage in a comprehensive 20-week foundational training course at a designated training center, culminating in the successful completion of SVQ2 units.
Key ResponsibilitiesReceive training in a practical electronics workshop setting under the guidance of experienced technical personnel, acquiring the skills necessary to support eleven research divisions within the School of Physics and Astronomy.
Assist in the design, construction, and evaluation of specialized electronic devices and electrical/electromechanical assemblies based on specifications provided by faculty and students.
Perform routine testing, maintenance, and repair of diverse electronic apparatus utilized throughout the School of Physics and Astronomy.
Fabricate printed circuit boards (PCBs) and operate surface mount technology equipment to assemble component boards as directed.
Utilize CAD software to develop electronic designs and PCB layouts under the supervision of a senior technician.
Conduct electrical safety assessments on equipment and maintain electronic record-keeping systems as instructed, ensuring compliance with established health and safety protocols.
Learn to operate various technical instruments as required to support research activities within the School of Physics and Astronomy.
Undertake any additional relevant tasks as assigned by the technical manager.
Required Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
Essential Qualifications
- A1 Higher or Intermediate 2 in Maths (or National 5) with grades A - C, plus one additional science or technology qualification.
- A2 Standard Grade Physics at level two or above, alongside two other Standard Grades from English, Chemistry, Biology, Technological Studies, Computing, or Graphic Communications.
Desirable Qualifications
- B1 Higher or Intermediate 2 (or National 5) with grades A - C in Physics, Electronics, Chemistry, or English.
Essential Skills
- C1 Strong communication abilities.
- C2 Capability to work with precision and attention to detail.
- C3 Team collaboration skills.
- C4 Ability to adhere to instructions.
- C5 Basic familiarity with Microsoft Windows.

Desirable Experience
- F1 Experience in computer usage and interaction with individuals through school activities, hobbies, or volunteer work is advantageous, particularly in contexts requiring high levels of supervision.
Employment Terms
The salary for this position is set at Grade 2, with an annual remuneration of £21,900. This is a full-time role (35 hours per week) and is fixed-term for a duration of up to 3 years.
