Job summary

As a clinician with a specific interest and knowledge in colorectal cancer, the GP lead for the FIT improvement project will work across the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Alliance (LSCCA) area to provide clinical advice and leadership in relation to the use of FIT in symptomatic patients to guide referrals to the colorectal urgent suspected cancer (USC) pathway.

This will include ensuringLancashire and South Cumbria (L&SC) works within clinical guidelines, operational standards, and meets key national outcome measures with regards to the use of FIT.

Main duties of the job

Working alongside the LSCCA senior project manager, develop and deliver an LSCCA-wide FIT communications and engagement plan to ensure uptake of FIT in primary care pre-referral; working with associated stakeholders in primary care, local medical councils, primary care networks, ICB primary care teams etc;

Drive improvement against the NHSE standard of 80% colorectal USC referrals accompanied with a FIT result (where appropriate in the absence of red flag symptoms);

Drive improvement in referral accuracy and completeness within primary care to ensure that if a patient needs to be referred, they are referred to the right place, the first time, improving patient experience and safety. Also support in developing safety netting processes for patients discharged from the colorectal USC pathways with negative or non-returned FITs;

Provide support to other colorectal USC stakeholders in matters relating to FIT uptake, use of FIT at clinical triage in providers, clinical pathway decisions, support the LSCCA FIT Steering Group etc;

Support toward the NHSE ambition to diagnose 75% of cancers at stage I or II by 2028 and participate in the Early Diagnosis Steering Group.

About us

LSCCA has a history of working with clinicians with specific interests to support key projects for cancer improvement. This includes primary care GPs already working with the cancer alliance at place level in each locality and established steering groups for Faster Diagnosis and Earlier Diagnosis programmes.

You will work closely with the senior project manager for colorectal and FIT improvement to operationalise the FIT improvement plan in primary care.

Job responsibilities

The GP FIT lead will be the clinical face of the FIT improvement project at place level, supporting and increasing awareness of FIT and colorectal cancer in line with national initiatives. Supporting and leading the awareness of new local initiatives described above.

The GP FIT lead will work alongside primary care stakeholders and direct activities in relation to areas of low performance and targeting health inequalities, supporting the implementation of the key aspects of the DES.

The GP FIT lead should participate in programmes of education to improve referral practice, increase awareness of new or evolving clinical guidance, and share best practice in relation to colorectal USC pathways.

The GP FIT lead will use their knowledge and experience to support the development of business cases and expansion plans in relation to community diagnostic centres, and any other relevant service development proposals.

The GP FIT lead will present relevant risks and issues to the Cancer Alliance Early Diagnosis Steering Group and FIT Steering Group and contribute to reports for use in quarterly updates for stakeholders across the system.

The GP FIT lead should link in with local Communities of Practice (COP), to allow development of workplans to support areas of focus. The COP should include stakeholders from their local place-based system and the agenda should cover agreed outcome measures and areas for improvement.
