An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated person with a passion for caring for older people to join Cedar's Ward as a deputy ward manager. The role is a full time post and will involve delivering all aspects of patient care, undertaking the responsibilities of a deputy ward manager and supporting the Ward Manager in managing the care and treatment of patients and providing managerial support and leadership to junior staff. The post holder will also deputise for the Ward Manager in their absence and ensure that high quality care is carried out in accordance with Trust policies and procedures and NMC guidance.

Cedar's ward is a 10 bedded unit caring for male older people with organic illnesses, based at Parklands house, Royal Oldham hospital.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a qualified RMN, expected to undertake all aspects of the role identified in the job description and meet the requirements of the person specification. The role will be to deliver all aspects of care to the patient group on the ward and to undertake the responsibilities required of a qualified nurse.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To support the Ward Manager in managing the care and treatment of older people on the inpatient unit and provide managerial support and leadership to a group of staff. You will deputise for the Ward Manager in their absence and ensure that the highest quality care is carried out in accordance with the policies and procedures of Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust and the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria
  • RMN
  • Current registration with Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Desirable criteria
  • Education in Dementia training
  • Mentorship qualification
Experience Essential criteria
  • 2 years post qualification at Band 5 or above working with Older People
  • Ability to implement change
  • Good leadership and operational management skills
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with older people with challenging behaviours
  • Providing 1-1 supervision and IPDR to junior staff
Knowledge Essential criteria
  • Ability to advise nursing and medical staff in best practice
  • Facilitation of MDT training
  • A knowledge and understanding of current Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act Legislation
Desirable criteria
  • How to care for appropriately and advise other staff in the management of patients with complex needs related to dementia
Work related circumstances Essential criteria
  • Use of a car or access to a suitable means of transport to travel across the Trust footprint
  • Able to work unsocial hours including weekends, bank holidays and night duty

  • A keen interest in working with this client group
Skills and abilities Essential criteria
  • Evidence of ability to provide specialist mental health assessment and risk assessment/ management and be accountable for decision making
  • Ability to communicate effectively and provide coherent reports and documentation according to Trust documentation standards
  • Ability to work with other professionals in order to promote a multi -disciplinary approach to clinical decision making and care planning
