Job summary

This is a one-year pilot project with the aim of developing and demonstrating the need for specialist Speech and Language Therapy provision within the Peterborough Youth Justice Service. The client group is young people aged 10-18 who have come into contact with youth justice services through a court order or through Precourt or diversion post-holder will work within a multidisciplinary team which includes psychologists, social workers, case managers, Youth and family workers, police and harmful sexual behaviour specialists. The team works collaboratively with multi-agency colleagues from the Police, Probation, MAPPA, Education, Drugs & Alcohol services, and Mental Health teams to safeguard children.

The post holder will be required to use their specialist clinical skills in the planning, development, and evaluation of the SEMH pathways, including contributing to defined projects as delegated by the Clinical Lead or Service manager. This involves supporting the local team in effective and equitable clinical decision making, ensuring that a good quality service is delivered and maintained. The post holder will be required to use their specialist clinical skills to develop and provide a range of training packages relating to supporting the communication needs of service users, to equip support staff and others with the specialist communication skills required to work with them.

Main duties of the job

This role requires a HCPC / RCSLT registered Speech and language therapist with knowledge and experience working with Children and Young people with SEMH To ensure the systematic provision of a high-quality Speech and Language therapy to young people in contact with the Youth Justice Service (YJS) in Peterborougho To be responsible for the independent management of a clinical caseload in the Peterborough YJS. The client group is young people (10-18) who are in contact with the YJS and present with a range Speech Language and Communication To provide appropriate and timely specialist intervention, which may include direct or indirect work with individuals, delivered in the most functionally appropriate context, which is relative to specific need and in communication friendly To share assessment findings with members of the multidisciplinary Youth Justice Service and support case managers in adapting intervention plans and programmes to meet of the young To provide training in the area of speech, language and communication needs to a range of professionals, acting as a resource to the wider multi-disciplinary team. o To monitor and evaluate the impact and effectiveness of speech and language provision within the youth justice service.

To be highly proficient in the assessment, identification, treatment and management of the highly specialist health and communication needs of children and young people in the youth justice system This may include assessment of complex conditions and presentations such as developmental trauma, neurodiversity as well as behaviour which To independently prioritise maintain and manage a caseload of young people who have speech, and language communication difficulties, within the Peterborough Youth Justice Service3. To undertake a range of assessments, both standardised and non-standardised, taking account of medical, social and educational factors, which combined with highly specialist theoretical knowledge will lead to differential To plan, deliver and evaluate intervention programmes following professional guidelines and agreed service To ensure that all work is carried out in close collaboration with all those involved in childrens care so that the approach to intervention and support is co-ordinated and To work collaboratively with case managers in order to modify-intervention plans based on outcomes and assessment To liaise and communicate effectively and sensitively with other professionals within the MDT and external agencies ( Schools, Mental Health Teams, Pupil Referral Units, Childrens Services, Local Authority, Youth Offending Services) providing highly specialist advice as To undertake administrative duties connected with the caseload including maintenance of case notes and provision of written reports, following service To make onward referral as appropriate10. Relevant national, local and regional legislation and policies, including those related to SEMH, including NICE guidelines. Underlying reasons for behaviour - including autism, learning disabilities (LD), developmental language disorder (DLD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Well established knowledge of assessment tools relevant to the client group including informal assessments for pragmatics, narrative skills, in additional to other language assessments. Barriers to communication that may be in place for CYP with SEMH.
