Advanced Occupational Therapist – Children with Medical Complexities

Birmingham, United Kingdom Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Job summary

We are looking for a skilled paediatric Occupational Therapist to join our team in a newly created role.

This post will join our newly funded hospital discharge team and will focus on supporting patients and their families with medical complexities. We believe that occupational therapy has an important role in supporting families and patients with a successful transition out of hospital, but that this work starts when their admission starts. This is a fast paced team looking after children from across a wide range of clinical specialties so problem solving and prioritising are important skills for this post. We are looking for someone with good assessment skills who can work across specialties and organisations to keep the patient at the heart of the plans. High level communication skills will be needed as well as flexibility in response to changing circumstances. Ideally, you would have experience of working in the community or are familiar with community services from health and social care so that you can support patients and families navigating their local service provision.

This post is based at the Children's Hospital in Birmingham but some travel to patients homes will be required so that you can complete assessments and work with families to prepare for their child leaving the hospital.

Main duties of the job

As this is a new role, it is especially important we measure outcomes and share any good practice we develop so we are looking for a therapist who is passionate about service evaluation and improvement. We will support individuals in quality improvement techniques, development of potential research and we would promote participation in professional networks relating to this post.

We can offer you access to high quality training inside and outside of the hospital to support both the clinical role and the leadership aspects of the job. We are a department that wants to develop a diverse range of skills and interests and are keen to support each other to achieve personal goals as well as the teams ambitions of providing high quality care that is personalised and effective for all patients. We are able to consider recruiting at a Band 6 if the right candidate does not meet the full criteria for a post at a Band 7 level.

Flexible working and workplace adjustments are always considered for staff in our team as we want to provide the conditions that allow you to focus on giving the best patient care.

For further information about this post, please contact Madeleine Paul or Ben Harris, B Heads of Occupational Therapy.
