Job summary

The Health in Mind team at BWCH is a vibrant and well-respected team of clinical psychologists and a Liaison Psychiatrist, with highly valued support from Assistant Psychologists, Trainee Clinical Psychologists and Psychiatrists in Training.

Main duties of the job

To provide psychological assessment, psychological interventions and deliver workshops/groups under the direction and supervision of the nominated Clinical Psychologist who holds clinical responsibility. To work according to a plan agreed with the supervisor. To assist in clinically related administration, conduct of audits, collection of statistics, development of audit and/or research projects, teaching and project work.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Following appropriate induction and under direction and supervision, to undertake protocol based psychological assessments, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the patient journey.

Following training to undertake protocol pathway assessments.

To assist in the delivery of care plans involving the psychological treatment and/or management of a patients problems, under the supervision of a qualified professional psychologist. The post holder can be required to work in a highly emotive atmosphere and must maintain a high degree of professionalism at all times.

To assist in the coordination and running of therapeutic groups.

To work with other staff to assess outpatients and inpatients and review their care in preparation for multi-disciplinary reviews.

To assist in the development of a psychologically based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the service, across all care settings.

To attend and contribute to clinical psychology meetings and appropriate multi-disciplinary meetings, as directed by the qualified clinical psychologists.

To assist in the design and implementation of service development projects within the service as required.

To attend meetings as required in which service developments are planned and discussed.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Upper class honors degree or higher in Psychology (A lower second class honors Degree supplemented by post graduate Qualification may be considered.) Entitlement To graduate membership of the British Psychological Society.

Desirable

Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology. Mental health practice and/or research design and analysis.

Knowledge & Nature of Experience

Essential

Work with people with mental health problems and/or other disabilities on a paid or voluntary basis. Ability to assist in teaching and training, and to develop psychometric skills High level communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive. Ability to communicate sensitive information to patients, carers and colleagues. An understanding of psychology applied to health care. Experience using Microsoft packages for databases or data analysis, especially SPSS for Windows.

Desirable

Experience of paid work in direct care provision. Previous experience as an Assistant in an NHS setting. Experience of teaching and training in the application of psychological principles to mental health problems. Experience of research evaluating and audit.

Personal Skills/Abilities and Attributes

Essential

Ability to interact sensitively and effectively with staff from all disciplines. An ability to interact with people with mental health problems or other disabilities and their families.

Desirable

An interest in working with people with mental health problems or other disabilities.
