Job summary

You will assist radiology staff including sonographers in the day to day running of the ultrasound department including patient care and patient flow. The post holder will be expected to perform administration duties in the ultrasound department as well as assist/ chaperone in the examination rooms and carry out patient care related tasks.

Main duties of the job

Receive and welcome patients and staff to the Ultrasound reception areas and deal with any enquiries in a kind and courteous manner.

Communicate effectively with staff within and outside of the department to ensure the smooth operation of the service including liaison with ward staff.

Give factual information to patients regarding examinations and understand the necessary preparations.

Assist sonographers, radiologists, consultants and patients within the examination room.

Assist with manual handling of patients including patient transfers to ultrasound couches. Chaperoning for ultrasound procedures.

Ensure waiting areas are tidy and when appropriate co-ordinate patients to ensure social distancing.

Assist with patient hygiene when necessary.

Job responsibilities

Communication

Receive and welcome patients and staff to the Ultrasound reception areas and deal with any enquiries in a kind and courteous manner. Communicate effectively with staff within and outside of the department to ensure the smooth operation of the service including liaison with ward staff. Give factual information to patients regarding examinations and understand the necessary preparations. To liaise with the superintendent and consultants regarding work schedules. Report incidents, accidents and complaints to a sonographer or the superintendent.

Clinical Responsibilities

Report any patient concerns to a sonographer. Respond appropriately to clinical emergencies and ensure you are aware of cardiac arrest procedures and cardiac arrest trolley audits and checks. Provide a high standard of personal patient care. Keep clinical areas tidy and stocked with appropriate equipment. Assist sonographers, radiologists, consultants and patients within the examination room. Assist with manual handling of patients including patient transfers to ultrasound couches. Ensure waiting areas are tidy and when appropriate co-ordinate patients to ensure social distancing. Assist with patient hygiene when necessary. Take patients and visitors temperatures when necessary

Administrative, Information Systems and Data Management

Be proficient in using Microsoft and be able to learn to use radiology software competently and safely. Accurately check patient personal details and update the demographics for patients either booking Radiology or attending for an appointment according to Trust ID procedure. With training, be competent in the use of the Radiology Information System (RIS) and Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS) and other clinical information systems used in radiology. Organise time slots for inpatients on RIS ensuring ward and portering staff are informed. Book in ED,GP, inpatients and outpatients for their ultrasound examinations. With training, accurately input patient data into the ultrasound equipment and have an understanding of IT business continuity planning. Report any IT or equipment issues to the lead/superintendent radiographer.

Planning and Organisational

Be aware of patient waiting times and inform lead radiographers of any waits. Ensure daily checklists are complete in order to ready the department for the day Check stock levels and inform procurement of shortages. Adhere to local policy for sickness and late arrival. Ensure your competency frame work is complete within the first 2 months of starting with the Trust.

Governance and Quality Control

Help provide a continuing improvement in service performance. Including assisting with the collection of activity related data. Record radiology statistics when necessary Complete and conduct department audits Report adverse incidents on In Phase and inform the superintendent

Person Specification

Education, Knowledge and Skills

Essential

Grade C/4 or above in GCSE Maths and English or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English or equivalent Computer literate with experience of accurate data entry using windows based PC programmes. Understands NHS Confidentiality Policy Understands NHS infection and Prevention Control Able to effectively communicate verbally and non-verbally with people at all levels. Demonstrates ability to be tactful and diplomatic. Must be reliable, flexible, adaptable and enthusiastic. Good time keeping Have physical dexterity necessary to meet the demands of the job Experience working in a public facing setting Excellent numeric, literacy skills and verbal skills
