Job summary

The role of the Infant Feeding Team is to promote close and loving relationships between parents and their babies which includes building a positive breastfeeding culture within the community. The UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative provides the standards to which the Health Visiting teams work, with Southwark working towards full accreditation and Lambeth working towards reaccreditation and Gold Award.

To further develop the process of UNICEF Baby Friendly accreditation, building on the stage 2 standards already

achieved and embed Baby Friendly care in a community setting that leads to achieving Sustainability and the Gold Award. Supporting health visiting teams with training, staff and mothers' audits and universal support.

Provide specialist support to women with additional breast feeding needs. Lead on coordinating services to provide a standard of care that actively promotes breast feeding and enables continuation of breast feeding in line with the current Baby Friendly Initiative standards alongside current infant feeding leads.

Main duties of the job

Work in partnership with all other GSTT and Kings College Hospital breast feeding leads to ensure a coordinated approach to breastfeeding support in the community.

To participate and contribute towards the South East London Infant Feeding strategy.

The post holder will be required to work primarily in Southwark but may need to work across borough boundaries, accessing and recording information using mobile devices, and coming into offices for meetings or specific events.

Provide training to health visiting teams in line with UNICEF UK BFI training curriculum Standards.

Job responsibilities

Establishing and sharing a clear vision of how to achieve Sustainability and have a robust understanding of the challenges and that it is a collective responsibility

Work in accordance with the NSF for Maternity Services, NICE Guidelines and the Healthy Child Programme in developing services and standards of practice.

Promote the public health benefits of breast feeding and lead to improve the continuation of breast feeding in line with Baby Friendly Initiative standards.

Take a lead role in the implementation and review of policies and protocols relating to infant feeding used by health visiting teams, primary care and childrens centre teams.

Work with community and Childrens Centre midwives, health visitors and peer supporters to expand and develop the network of breastfeeding support groups which provide professional and peer support to breastfeeding mothers.

Be recognised as a specialist professional with an increased knowledge in breast feeding and act as a resource for information and support.
