Job summary

Highly Specialist Physiotherapist in clinical outcome evaluation for clinical trials and natural history studies in Neuromuscular disease

To develop the role of specialist clinical trials evaluator in neuromuscular disease providing a high standard of assessment and documentation in line with GCP recommendations. The post holder will be expected to abide by the trial protocols and ensure that they have undertaken the necessary relevant training for each study. The successful candidate must work collaboratively with the trials team and the Leonard Wolfson Clinical Research Facility staff.

This is an exciting opportunity to take a highly specialist neuromuscular physiotherapy post in the NHNN Centre for neuromuscular disease [CNMD] within a multi-disciplinary team. This post will lead on all aspects of screening and monitoring of patients participating in clinical trials and natural history studies. The post holder will be expected to be familiar with standard clinical trial outcome measures of muscle strength and function.

Main duties of the job

o To co-ordinate patient visits for studies and trialso To be the lead clinical evaluator for sponsored clinical trials and natural history studieso To work as a team with other staff members involved in clinical trials, ensuring smooth handovero To ensure patient safety at all timeso To ensure the highest possible clinical trial governanceo To keep up to date with trial specific training eg GCP training, trial outcome training To ensure accurate documentation and storage of all trial datao To upload trial data to the electronic clinical trial recordo To maintain trial participant confidentiality at all timeso To train other physiotherapists in the centre on trial outcome measureso To work within a multi-disciplinary team.

The post-holder will be expected to work closely with the centres established neuromuscular physiotherapy highly specialist physiotherapy post will be dedicated to research activities under the supervision of Professor Quinlivan, principally in enabling the physiotherapists development as an expert clinical evaluator in the context of clinical trials. Current studies (including those in set up) include trials for Becker Muscular Dystrophy, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Central Core Myopathy.

The post holder will be also expected to work closely with Neuromuscular team and take a physiotherapy lead for young adults with muscle disease following transition from Great Ormond Street. The successful candidate will work closely with all members of the team to develop new treatments and care pathways for patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The CNMD is a nationally recognized dedicated clinical centre for patients with neuromuscular diseases. A dynamic and enthusiastic group of consultants lead by Professor Hanna [muscle] and Dr Reilly [peripheral nerve] assess and treat over 3000 patients in this centre each year.

There is a very wide referral base both locally and nationally. Separate specialist muscle and peripheral nerve clinics operate in the centre each week and are supported by a growing multidisciplinary care team including dedicated neuromuscular clinical nurse specialists ( dedicated for the McArdle service).

There are specific links with cardiology and respiratory services within UCLH Trust. In additional, joint inflammatory muscle disease clinics are held in conjunction with the UCLH Rheumatology centre and there are monthly transition clinics with Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Currently there are six consultant neurologists involved in the muscle service (Prof Hanna, Prof Quinlivan, Dr Parton, Dr Turner, Dr Morrow, Dr Machado). There are five consultants involved in the peripheral nerve service (Professor Reilly, Professor Lunn, Dr Manji, Dr Laura and Dr Carr).

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

Degree/or equivalent in Physiotherapy Registered Physiotherapist (HCPC) Previous experience of working in the NHS

Desirable

Post graduate qualification Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (CSP)

5 years post-graduate work experience at appointment Previous research and/ or clinical trial experience 2 years specific neuromuscular experience Evidence of participation in audit. Evidence of participation in and organisation of Inservice Training programmes.
