Job summary

This opportunity would ideally suit an experienced Band 6 or above occupational therapist working in the NHS (or equivalent) that has expertise in formal teaching, training, and supervision. This post is well-suited to those considering a move into a teaching role.

In this role, you will be involved in supporting the delivery of our degree apprenticeship provision for the North West Region working on the Occupational Therapy course and inter-professional portfolio.

As a Lecturer, you will be able to inspire our students and make a valuable contribution to their learning experience, whilst preparing them for contemporary occupational therapy practice.

Alongside this, youll have the opportunity to develop your career, further your own academic profile and enhance your teaching through studying for a Postgraduate Certificate Teaching in Higher Education.

Main duties of the job

You must be an HCPC-registered occupational therapist and have well-developed and current knowledge and understanding of critical, practical, and theoretical issues relevant to contemporary practice.

Ideally, youll be at the forefront of new ways of working in the NHS, in either primary or secondary settings, demonstrating care innovation and emergent management pathways.

We have a team of lecturers to deliver our apprenticeship provision and it would be envisaged that you would be part of this innovation, contributing to occupational therapy education in higher education whilst retaining strong links with practice partners.

The Degree Apprenticeship programme is delivered in weekly blocks interspersed throughout the year encompassing hybrid delivery made up of 2 days on-site and 3 days online.

Our main base is at Sheffield Hallam University where hybrid working is our normal practice (online or on-campus) and with occasional travel to the North West (approximately 2 days per month).

The role also requires you to contribute to our pre-registration apprenticeship course through teaching, assessing, academic advising and academic citizenship.

The ability to inspire, enthuse and connect with a range of backgrounds is required. You will support students academic and placement learning progression and work collaboratively to enhance the student experience.

Role purpose

To teach and support students by taking a learner-centred approach in line with the Universitys learning, teaching, and assessment strategy.

To contribute to interprofessional curriculum development and delivery, research, and other forms of scholarly activity as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Main duties

The post holder performs a range of duties and responsibilities from those listed below. The balance of these will vary between post holders and depend on experience.

Student experience

Designs and delivers innovative, high quality and challenging learning experiences. Equips students with the skills, knowledge and attributes required by employers through delivery of the curriculum. Contributes to the development of a sense of student community and acts as key contact for students. Assists with the operational delivery of courses / modules and acts proactively to address any emerging issues, escalating as appropriate. Actively participates in student induction (where appropriate), including preparation of key information for students. Plays an active role in the pastoral care and supervision of students.

Learning, teaching, and assessment

Plans and delivers the curriculum using appropriate media, including the use of IT. Engages in critical reflection on practice as a basis for improving performance. Contributes to innovation in learning, teaching, assessment, and curriculum development with the aim of meeting the needs of learners. Provides effective feedback, support, and guidance to students. Translates professional experience into the academic context as appropriate. Regularly engages in staff development activities relating to teaching, learning and assessment. Supervises individual and group-based student activities, , dissertations, industrial placements, work-based projects.

Research and scholarly activity

Identifies and conducts research and scholarly activity which is relevant to the lecturing role. Integrates research into teaching and learning. Identifies opportunities for income generation and / or entrepreneurialism through research, consultancy, or professional practice.

Teamwork and communication

Works effectively with colleagues at all levels and contributes to the achievement of team objectives. Develops collaborative relationships across teams and between colleges / departments. Maintains dialogue with managers in the performance of post responsibilities. Develops networks of useful contacts both within and outside the University.

Experience

Essential

Teaching, training, and supervising students and peers Well-developed current understanding of practical and theoretical issues in contemporary occupational therapy practice. Experience in a range of clinical environments and occupational therapy roles with evidence of highly developed specialised knowledge in at least one of these areas. Knowledge of current developments within the profession, NHS care, HEE, and Higher Education. Knowledge of how information technology and online learning can support educational delivery

Desirable

Evidence of a contribution to knowledge in your field publications/creative work/service evaluations Undertaking professional or academic project work , research, creative or industrial projects, scholarship and/or knowledge exchange

Qualifications

Essential

Good occupational therapy honours degree ( UK or 1st Class), or equivalent professional qualification or experience in a relevant discipline A relevant postgraduate qualification OR a commitment to complete one. HCPC Registration Postgraduate teaching qualification (PG Cert or HEA fellowship) or a commitment to complete PG Cert Teaching in Higher Education (if eligible- see above)

Desirable

Evidence of post-registration professional development in occupational therapy at MSc level
